View Full Version : Any recent Blackbird Motor reviews?

New user here...I have read through the older posts about Blackbird, but I am curious...are they are any recent opinions?

We found them via the Internet. Our boat is having serious motor issues, and our local marina/mechanics have tried desperately to help us. We have one motor with hardly any power, and the kicker is, it has a newer power head. The second motor, has the original power head on it, and provides full power. Blackbird is trying to convince us to drive down for a day or so, and that they can diagnose and rebuild anything within one business day. We have read the reviews here, and on thehulltruth, so we are weighing our options.

Just thought I'd see if they have redeemed themselves to anyone lately!

Thanks!

Do a search for A-1 outboard as well, they are the same company. I cant think of a single business in the marine industry with a worse reputation.

Sorry, just saw the 1 post AND the topic, just smelled a little fishy...

And yes, that is the purpose of the forums, you will find a plethora of great info here from some very stand up guys.

Why would you consider going to a shop that has such a reputation in the first place? It would have to be at least 10 years after the fact.

That's why I'm throwing this question out there...we are torn. I believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt, but to a certain point (given the fact that money is involved). We are in Western Michigan.

They are basically saying they will fix it while you wait and that cannot possibly be true.

That being said, Curious why you would even consider them, they have burnt ALOT of people, the fact that your hard earned money is involved, and all you have read on them, I would think the red flags would be popping up all over for you, betting someone will chime in on some reputable people/ places from your area, hang in there and see what pops up, but do yourself (and your wife) a favor, and stay away from Blackbird..

Your hoping someone will post a recent good experience because A1 is cheap but they are cheap for a reason.

What boat and motors do you have there a lot of good mechanics in Michigan Illinois and Wisconsin that are way closer

There are probably not many recent reviews because I'm sure their volume of business dropped SUBSTANTIALLY based on people's experiences with the work they performed.

The information you found on this forum is a fraction of what's out there. There was a BLEVE of posts about it on the Bass Fishing Home Page some years back. I would run, not walk, away.

No-one can rebuild an engine correctly in one day. Not unless they pawn of one of them ready to go engines and keep yours!

Two Mercury 225 Blackmax outboards, 1995's. Both have just over 400 hours on them.

Hey, have a chuckle on my original question if you'd like, but I believe in doing my research. I know what my gut's telling me, I just wanted to throw the question out there. Thanks for all the comments so far, smarta$$ or not.

Troll or assistant troll. In all seriousness, if there were a blend of good and bad reviews, I would get your question. I have never heard of good review. I also, have never dealt with them, and would not, based solely on what you already know. Whats your end game?

And there you have it. Zero positive reviews. Several questions of your sanity.

Marlin whats wrong or do you beleave is wrong with your motor?

The boat is a 35' Marlin. For those who are asking legitimate questions about my boat, one motor has full power, the second has a rebuilt powerhead and has zero power. The boat has been gone through several times by mechanics with several issues being corrected or replaced...ignitions were replaced, the harness was checked, spark plugs replaced, you name it. The only thing we have left to wonder is if there is an electrical issue. The boat is running 35-40mph, but looking at the Garmin system was already installed when we bought the boat the boats average speed was 47mph.

We've done all that we can with the people we know, we are just looking to see IF BY CHANCE anyone had a good experience, or can anyone toss out another company to contact??? Everyone seems to have a bad opinion, yet can't name anyone else.

Once again, I am not a troll. Please forgive me if you think I have thrown a dumb question out there; don't waste your time replying to it then.

What RPM are you reaching and is it the same on both motors?

How far are you from Wisconsin ? As Mike Giesler stated, a few really good guys that way that could get you dialed in.

How about a legitimate answer on what your motor is or is not doing. You asked for opinions about a company and you got them. What does "zero power" mean? Does the motor start? Does it go into gear? What happens when you mash the throttle? Does it rev up and go no where? You could have a spun hub in your prop for all I know. If you want help with your engine, maybe you should start a thread for that. Back and forth about Blackbird will get you what you already got. Jmo.

Exactly what motor or motors are these. Model and or serial numbers plus HP would be a good start.

I want to give you the benefit of the doubt, but as I have said before when it is your HARD EARNED MONEY, and you've read all the bad, WHY would you be torn ? At a certain point you have to make the conscience decision that this particular place ( Blackbird) has done more bad than good, I don't want to see you start off on the wrong foot on here, but you keep opening the door to be ridiculed for not protecting yourself when the facts are staring you in the face ?

Can you help me out here ?
How can one be NEWER , and one be ORIGINAL , yet both have the same amount of hours ?

Your mechanic isn't worth his weight , if he's replaces all your electronic , yet hasn't pulled a compression check .
These older motors are not rocket science , and very easy to work on .

Hope you find someone to help you with your issues .
What ever they may be !

So far I would say Balckturds abilities (or lack thereof) have been discussed. I would post a detailed list of what you have and what has been done. We will get you going in the right direction. If you were closer I would suggest you bring it by my shop and I would try to give you an honest diagnosis. If the motor has compression, fuel, and spark the rest is not too difficult. Let us know exactly what's going on and we will help. Excuse the smart assed remarks. We want to help but this is also for fun.
