I was thinking of putting my 21 foot Team Shadow in at Liberty State Marina and cruise around New York.
My brother said I'm crazy.
I've never been up there, is this too rough for my boat, for taking along family?
Are there marinas you can pull up to on the NY side that would be safe for the boat?

Your bother is correct.
Take it to Long Island or upstate NY, that area is much too big/open, it can get crazy rough and it is busy with big boats/barges traffic etc. Not a place to enjoy your size boat and certainly not a safe thing with family on board unless you get real lucky early in the morning......JMO.

I worked there for a whole summer in a 24 superboat and it would have to be a perfect day (rare) for it to be enjoyable. I had fun but I was alone and the boat spent a ton of time in the air even though I was only doing 35

If you were going to do it I'd say the only reason would be to say you did it. I'd like to do it in my Checkmate one day. Once you get out of the harbor it's not that bad and the Harlem River isn't bad. I've run down from North of the Tappan Zee to Ground Zero for the 10th anniversary of 911 in my 21 Checkmate, wasn't bad except for the crap floating in the water. I know a few guys from the Checkmate site that do it somewhat regularly in the same boat as mine.

Maybe start from the public ramp right under the GWB and go north? Plenty of fuel stops, places to eat, and you can run past West Point then fill up and eat something in Newburgh.

Come on guys, don't scare him. With all due respect to you flat runners, I've run my 21 in New York Harbor all the time coming down through the sound and East River. I can give you a ton of first hand info if you are interested, you will love it. You just have to properly prepare your peeps and your rig.

My dad just did the trip around the island last weekend in his 19' Grady. He had a blast and wants to do it again. He said it wasn't busy at all and his only complaint was the wakes from the ferries and tour boats. He put in at the park under the GWB.

I've circled Manhattan Island in a 13' Whaler, then ran it up the Hudson to Lake Champlain over the course of three days....but that was 35 years ago when I was young and .... bold :D

A Team Shadow 21 will be fine as it has decent freeboard for a go fast and is stout. How big a fuel tank do you have in the boat and what are you running for power? High test gas is getting very tough to come by. Bringing the family is a must if they are boaters just don't drag along 'ol Aunt Emma or Uncle Herb. Make sure each person has a proper life vest, not some piece of crap and WEAR THEM. Also, have a floating throw circle and 50' of line bungied in the Shadows splash well for easy and quick access. Putting in at Liberty State Park makes sense as it limits your drive up as opposed to going further up to the GWB ramp and you see the Statue right away for awe and can make your decision on Hudson River or East River first.

It's a great ride and many trip options from that location depending on how much time you want to be out. I like 10 hour slices. If you're making the effort, might as well get 'er done the right way the first time!

Were you the guy who would drop the hook on your 24 Super under the Brooklyn Bridge a couple years ago?

Yes ran that boat doing safety boat work for the construction on the bridge. There at 615-2pm, the coast guard, nypd and anti-terrorism boats were notified every morning cause it sure does not look like a work boat but they always stopped by any way :p There were a couple guys working the boat so I wasnt there every day but every day was a washing machine. 8 hrs on a 24/7ft boat rockin and rolling the ENTIRE time. Pulled some cool **** up from building the bridge when I finally coaxed the danforth out of the cable and crap on the bottom of that river

That particular location under the Brooklyn Bridge is the roughest. You get the all ferry movement, an open wind sweep against or with the current, and the occasional barge. I ran down there from CT yesterday. The view of that bridge though makes up for it.

Well, maybe not for you seeing as you were there every day

I wonder what the original poster ended up doing? Today's the perfect weather to make that run.

Cool view but yes I got sick of it. the new FDNY boat 343 going by always ended up tossing **** every where. Then it bounced off the sea wall and sent you for another ride.

Best thing about that spot was the "scenery" running on the board walk. Had to anchor close to the wall and pray for high tide. ;)

FD 343 is one BIG vessel. When that monster is on the sticks it makes the Circle Line's rollers look like kid stuff. The scenery, that IS good right there. If you ever need to do a quick drop off, there is a spit of sand right under the bridge about 10' wide that you can bow into very carefully (and quickly) for pickin up peeps. I never tried to get in there at low tide.

Yes 343 is very limited in the harbor. Its a scary roll when they lean on it in Ambrose channel
