View Full Version : Does removing air silencer help engine breath better?

i am looking for ways to increase engine RPM on holeshot, have not ruled out CCM reeds, and wondering if removing big clunky air silencer would help, i have Bob's Louvers for fresh air already, or could dust eat motor quicker? JIM

I doubt it. At least not enough to tell by "seat-of-the-pants". I removed my silencer once when sync'ing carbs out on the lake; WAY too loud! Like, hurt my ears loud. I don't care if removing it did give better performance. There has to be a better way to get that w/o putting up with the ear-splitting racket.

Thanks for the comment on the pic! Lower Columbia River, Troutdale/Camas area, summer of '13, Mt. Hood in the background. Boat runs 72.5 on gps w/ just me in the boat. My son was in the back so I was probably running about 68-70 in that pic.
Question... Have you tried running w/o the silencer? Maybe you can tolerate the noise, unlike me (also I know my wife would be saying, "WTH???"). I'm no expert, but I am an accomplished shade tree engineer/mechanic;; they offer no degrees for that, though... As I look at Merc's design of how they engineered airflow to the carbs on these motors, it's hard to believe that removing the silencer would help. I'm looking at the CCMS reeds for my little 2.0L 150 myself. I could use more out-of-hole "umph".

no benefit what so ever or are the velocity stacks ,cut the heads to 34cc its the biggest bang for the buck i use solely CCMs reeds they are good reeds and Chris is a fine fellow to deal with
just to give some light on air boxes without them on the noise is very annoying ,no performance gain without
I run 8000 rpm with my stock air boxes on 245 carb ,another good point is they keep water and other junk out of the motor that may end your day ,little head and reed work will help ,maybe a good prop

I was down there yesterday. Put in at Dalton Point and ran down to Camas and back. Took a trip around the islands on the Oregon side on the way back. I took the turn around Rooster Rock and it took a few minutes to realize I was zipping through a nudist colony at 75 MPH. All the guys came out of their tents to wave. Yep. It was all guys. I do so hate Portland.

Where is Dalton Point? I grew up on the Columbia down there. We usually put in at Chinook Landing, or Rooster Rock (no nudists at the ramp, hehe), sometimes Camas. I live in Tacoma now, so trips down there are usually a short vacation.

Dalton Point is a small ramp and parking lot just after Rooster Rock state park before you get to Multnomah Falls as you head east on I-84. Only accessible from the westbound side. Sucks to launch there as the current is strong, there's no dock and its not in a protected cove like Rooster Rock's ramp is but hey, its free :).

Ahh, I've seen it. Usually when I'm on my way back from some place east on I84.
