At this point in the game, that's probably to broad of a question to ask. Too many variables; boat, purpose, rigging, weight, cost, look, longevity are all going to be questions that need to be spoken on before someone could make an educated recommendation for you. Post up some details about what your rigging and what your plans are and I'm sure some light can be shed on the situation

IMO, these are not comparable engines. The new E-Tec is much more comparable to a Verado - and if comparing those two, the new E-Tec looks to be the way to go IMO. For displacement hulls up to 90mph or so, the E-Tec looks great. If you have an air entrapment hull and want to run at least 100, forget the E-Tec because it's not going to do it...........

things have changed people just don't want to believe! Not for nothing I'm Merc all day as well but your statement just isn't true anymore and those motors are Evinrudes old ETEC's..... #imjustsaying

I'm not going to argue with you, because I'm basing my statement purely on the information listed on Evinrude's website. You may know something I don't know about different gearcase/gear ratio options - but I can guarantee you that with the gearcases those E-Tecs are pictured with and the gear/rpm listed for them, there's no way in hell they'd push a cat over 100.

My 200ho had 1880hours on it and ran 102-103 with a 34 and a magnum 2 gearcase with no nosecone and a bondo torque tab :leaving:
But I agree there is a 10+mph gain going to 1.62.

Hears the million dollar question. Why doesn't Evinrude make 162 gears. Better yet 1.56.

Because apparently brp doesn't give a rats behind about racing or anything to do about racing they just care about big fishing boats and little one to I am sure they always say there is not a big enough market for it I am going to use a quote from a movie "if you build it they will come"

Saying is correct im sure and it would probably be better on there fishing boat market also. Smaller pitch and more efficiency and speed.

Unfortunately, that question is worth very little to any of the OEM's. A 1.62 gear set would net such a small amount of revenue, it wouldn't pay to consider it. I hate to say it, but after being involved with the industry for a few years and talking to OEM's, it is clear that any sort of outboard racing is dead. :nonod:

Salstrip is running over 120 with 1.86 cases with his Etec's on a 30 ft cat.....he's spinning 40-42 pitch Herring props....Sorry to burst your bubble...I'm not sticking up for the new G2....To talk about purchasing a motor that's no where near production reliability is really jumping the gun. Lots of missed opportunities.....

I would love to see that. What kind of cat? I do not believe Herring even makes 40pitch props for outboards.....

once again im im a Merc man but your statement/opinion is well just incorrect there's an I tire race series dedicated to one motor give it time do some research stop being a one manufacture cheer leader and well we'll all bennifit!!!! BRP like it or not gentlemen is the only viable solution and the time is now or you'll all be Johnny come latelies....... From a Merc for life guy that's not a fool!

06-18-2014, 08:36 AM
Further more I'm a fan for the best available technology if BRP makes the best power heads the race community should embrace that and well apparently they do. If Merc makes the best lowers well we should be focused on figuring out how to match that lower with BRP's power head what other industry dictates that you use only one supplier that's well counter productive to going fast if that's your only thought process......?

I have one of those on my 95 150, and it is so much smoother than the original case. Spanky built it for me. And it drives better too. On a slow boat. :D

I as as a home grown Mercury fan concur that at the domestic level Mercury as little to no competition. Although on the international stage which is way bigger then our domestic market BRP is racing excepted and winning. However I do agree domestically BRP has less visibility.

So how many Formula one boats are running BRP? Go ahead, I'll wait for you to google it.
BTW: Even a 5 year old knows the difference between then and than.

Smarter I know they race those motors in p1 offshore I was talking about f1 or drag. Boat racing there are guys willing to run them but without a raised limiter it's not worth it it's about competition and make faster and better products just my two cents

Only on the internet do 300hp motors swing 42" pitch props (that don't even exist) through 1.85 gears @ 6,000rpm and push 30' cats 120mph with water pickups 3" above the propshaft on their gearcases! ;)

I have to to agree when it comes to P1 they difinitely race each other. However everyone is gaining from it. The best way to learn the weaknesses of a motor is to race them and offshore is exactly where your gonna learn enough.......

unfortunately the other guys are a dying breed..... And that's from a Merc guy. Come on lets be honest the best motor Merc produces and I own one is the 300xs and we all know nobody gets to 300 hours without blowin up or replacing things along the way.....#imo
