Just courious how many run thermostats in there merc? I do but I hate the few minutes of wait time to see the Tell stream.
Running thermostats makes sence to me but have read some run a 3/8 washer and others just toss them over the side.
Thanks

i was told to keep them. they arent that expensive and they let motor get to operating temp quicker. you really dont want to wind up a cold motor

Absolutely.
They keep the temp more even and consistent.

I about lost a new rebuild due to NEW thermostats not opening properly, did a boil test and one was opening about 20 degrees hotter than the other, under a load, that would have been a problem. I pulled out the stats and placed a fender washer instead, yes I will have to be careful on colder days/ colder water, but I never run early spring, and rarely to late in the fall...

I took mine out about 2yrs. after I bought a new 150 in 1985 one of the stats failed to open causing the engine to over heat. After consulting with several merc. Mechanics they told me to remove them, don't need stats in fl, gut the internal parts and put the housings back in, haven't had a cooling problem since. I change the impeller every 2-3 yrs depending on hours on the motor. Salt water motor and everything is still working fine, motor and lower unit have never been apart.
