My small tank inside the cowling would not fill. Found that the check valve mechanism was missing from the check valve fitting. This is the same as having a 1/8 hole on the side of the block. So, what happens to the power output of cylinder #5 when the remote tank check valve blows open?
The check valve is used to pressurize the remote tank pushing the oil into the small oil tank inside the cowling. It’s my understanding that positive pressure drives the next fuel/air cycle into the cylinder when the port open. If so, dose cylinder #5 ever get a full charge do to the fact that some pressure is always purged out on every cycle?

You are pressurizing a closed system. Once its pressurized it will stay that way. No more flow at that point. When you shut it down it will bleed back into the port in the front half. Not having the check valve there isnt going to affect anything unless you have a cap unscrewed on your oil tanks.

No pressure flows back into the front half because that is what the check valve is for when it is working.
OK what happens when there is a pressure leak in the remote system? For example a loose tie strap or hose clamp?

The same thing that happens when you have a check valve there. "Air" escapes and you may or may not have enough pressure in the system to move oil into the engine mounted reservoir. Your warning horn goes off and you wonder why.
If you dont have the check valve the "air" ( and whatever oil it carries with it ) in the remote tank does flow back into the front half when you shut it down. Otherwise it stays somewhat pressurized depending on hose and seal conditions. It doesnt have to be perfect. Thats why you have a engine mounted surge tank. You can and should fix/replace the check valve . Just dont expect any performance gains by doing so
