1980 Merc Questions

Have a 200 merc question about the black box located on top of carbs. Is this the timing control module that I here people say needs to go in the trash? Hope so because the wires are toast. My question is when you take this box off do I need to reset the timing on my motor or should it already be set. I have had 2 ppl tell me that it should be fine and not to worry but I don't want to cook the motor. On this motor what should I set the timing too if it needs to be done?

Is there a number on the box? how many and what color are the wires? Some did high speed advance only, some were high speed advance and idle stabilizers, some were only idle stabilizers. In any case get rid of it set your max timing to 23 deg and giver.

Idle stabilizer. Give it tha "float test"...........like Dave says.

Ok got rid of that box set the timing to 23 boat ran ok but still having an issue. I had two cylinders with no spark the other day so I replaced the switch box/power pack got spark back (on trailer). Boat is surging from 5-5800 r's holding WOT it would kick in then shut down on and off for a while then just stayed at 5k and never went back to 5800 so I though when I got back to the ramp I would have a cylinder with no spark but I didn't good spark on all 6 and 135 psi on all cyl. Could a power pack have spark on trailer but surge higher in on one cylinder RPM?

Always replace switch box's in pairs.

For sure, been there done that and had all the frustration from trying to save someone a few bucks. Mallory makes a great switchbox and very good price.

Bought a set a couple weeks ago. Worked great they are dicontinued by mallory tho. Blackbearsportinggoods.com had them maybe they still have a set

I just bought a set from Blackbearsportinggoods.com if I wanted to replace the stator as well does anybody know what amp it is?
