Mercury intake tunnels?

What exactly are these tunnels in the intake and what would happen if I filled them full?

oil recirculation and possibly oil feed to the top bearing

All the do is help equalize the intake pulses between the cylinders. Helps motor idle a little better. Has nothing to do with oiling the motor. Fill them in if you want but won't make it run faster. If you look at the back side of the reed plate there are a lot of big areas you can fill in and get some performance out of. I would also suggest you install our sport reeds too. It will deffinetly run much better.
