Running exactly like I was expecting it to! Yeah I felt like a kid at Christmas. Just have some water pressure demons to figure out, but those babies scream!

Mike, only turned up to about 7200 I think. My eyes were glued to the water pressure and temp gauges. Running your old big wheels on it. Tried to make a video like yours.

I cut into the bottom of the sponsons on my 21 skater to get more water flow to the motors it made a big difference in water preasure doing the job was easy someone on hear or else where sent me a diagram of how to do it ramps they were called if I remember motors bolted to transom on bottom holes pushed 25 lbs water preasure at 8200 rpms my problem was turning the boat would lose big time water preasure..

Thanks guys, it's been a hell of a mission getting our boat setup to our liking and making everything come together. We still have a ton of stuff to do but we have come a long way. Heading to RR now!
helps to watch video we are still frozen here 28 inches of ice left on lakes ,love the twins

cut water ramps into the bottom of the boat and open up the water intakes on the gear cases. you will have more water pressure and then you can jack the motors higher. The ramps need to be about 2 inches wide and less then 1/4 inch deep in the fiberglass. There are some pics on OSO that I followed when I did my 28. Works great and easy to do. Good luck. And great vidio
Very, Very nice.......I'm going to have a smoke after that!

Tony,
If and when you carve on the running surface (ramps), take a piece of 1 1/2 pvc pipe, wrap it with 80 grit sand paper and go back and forth bow to stern directly in front of the gear case center. You will be amazed at how much water you can get into the cases with just removing a little bit of material from the surface and directing it upward. Take baby steps so that you don't create drag by shooting a bunch of water onto you cases. Once that's done, if you are loosing too much pressure when turning, install a balance tube between the motors. This will allow the motors to share pressure (I have done this on several boats and works great)-its also much easier then plumbing in remote pick-ups. Make sure that you install a shut off valve somewhere in the balance tube so that you can flush the motors and have them separated.

Thanks joe. I'm hoping the ramps and gear case mods will do it. I get what you're saying about too much drag also. If it came down to it, I would choose water over speed. I'm more happy with working motors than squeezing another 2mph out of it. Marty and joe have been going over the lowers step by step with us, measuring setup, and trying to get it figured out. Hopefully soon we get it worked out so I can really open them up see where I'm at.

Once you groove out the ramps, how do you re seal the surface to keep it dry?
JPEROG

epoxy resin and 545 primer-you won't be going real deep and there is filler where skater sharpens the edges as well.

can you please explain what a balance tube is and a pic perhaps.
Thanks.

I would use some type of longboard sander, but if you do this mod and get that warm fuzzy feeling about your GPS #'s, remember what Joe said, at this height when you turn your raised motors, the one that turns towards the tunnel is out of the ramp and is blocked by the hull and no water pressure instantly. You either have to do the crossover mod he mentioned or be VERY careful when turning ;)

I did same ramps in a skater last year . Used right angle air grinder with a small disk 36 grit. And kept it flat. Not cutting with just edge. Used that for rough out .took apart a metal slide square and wrapped the flat metal with 80 grit then 180 etc . Turned out perfect , but then again be doing high end body work my whole life :D make sure you put the ramps in the bottom of sponson and not in the step like someone else did :D certain skater has ramps to cool the upper lower unit bearings at low speeds lol

Little off topic , but what kind of hrs can you get out of those 280s before rebuild ?
albypine
05-02-2014, 08:49 PM
They suggest rering at 100 to 150 hours depending on how it's ran and what oil . My 280 is a Science project and will do nice thread when it comes apart . Going on 4th season this year and I run it like it's stolen every time out :D

Ours had about 150 original hours on them before we rebuilt them. But they had consumer ecu boxes and don't appear to have ever been abused or ran too hard.

Lol my box was a ros it had 67 hours and ten thousand times on the limiter :D mine was side pin piston motor and a few pins walked and had to be renicked . Motor was off a off shore race boat and it's twin went on a mirage that use to be on lake tarpon .

Those motors had a tough life but break them in like your gonna use them:D After being on a 32 doug wright their whole life going on a small tunnel is like retirement :D
Mike ran his 118 on his 4 seater with 2 fat guys up front with your sister motor. Those two motors were built on a wednesday or somethin ;)

Mask area off with a good tape like duck tape wrap a piece of 36 grit sandpaper around a paint stick perfect size and have at it and reduce paper to 80 grit on down..
