View Full Version : whats the diff between 2t motorcycle oil and outboard 2t oil

i have had many 2t bikes such as kawi h2 750s, rg500 gamma, aprilia rs250. i always ran amzoil 100 to 1 pre mix and never had any type of seizure. i have a pair of rude 300s on my 32 manta and was wonder what the diff is between mc and outboard 2t oils. thx in advance for enlightening me, rm

I think the load on the outboards is greater as is the amount of time they spend at or close to redline. A quality oil mixed at 40:1 will not smoke that badly, will not foul plugs, will lessen wear on the engine, and will make more hp. I've seen the dyno sheets on a 2 stroke 250cc single cylinder ATV engine run at all different ratios (50:1 to 20:1 IIRC) and the oil rich mixes made more hp. Not a lot but the point is it didn't hurt the power output.

Air cooled vs water cooled 2 stoke oils have different chemistry.
Typical 2 stroke outboard engine oil meets TC-W3 standards although not all manufacturers send in their oil for certification.

I'll let you in on all the info but first you will have to ship me a Suzuki RG 500 Gamma , one of the trickest bikes of all time !!

The Gama is exceptional. I always wanted one after I got out of the Suzuki dealership but never could find one when I had the money.
Ended up finding an RZ500. I ran Amzoil at 70 to one with no problems. I know there are differences in oils but I have used marine in the RZ in an emergency and the same with regular oil in my outboards with no problems.
I really think the manufacturers will say anything to get your money.

The semi syn that goes in my boat goes in my sleds, and goes in my built motor in my ice trike. It was recommended by a member here with probably 35 years of outboard and sled experience as what he uses in his stuff. If it's got his trust it's got mine.

I use to ride with a guy who had a Gamma. I had a Kaw ZX10 at the time and he was right there with me.

I would pull away but not too fast until we really got moving. Might not have been stock either.

Yamalube 2-R is what Chris Fairchild recommended for my SST120 motor. I always ran Red Line Two Stroke Race Oil (the red oil) in my 2.5/280s at 32:1 and never had a problem. I raced 2 stroke 80s and 125s all through the '80s with the same exact oil at 40:1 and never had a problem.........

I asked a Klotz rep once what the difference between snowmobile and watercraft oil was ( I had a bunch of snow oil in stock and needed watercraft) . He said " the label".

Air cooled engines (like motorcycles and chainsaws) and water cooled engines (like outboards) have very different requirements for lubricants. Your average TC-W3 oil is not a good choice for a motorcycle engine.
However, some synthetic TC-W3 rated oils also meed JASO-FD and ISO-TD, the most stringent standard for air cooled engines. Klotz is one of them: https://www.klotzlube.com/techsheet.asp?ID=62

Realistically, there's not a lot of air-cooled motorcycle/ATV 2 strokes anymore. The only one you see regularly that was built in the last 25-30 years is the Yamaha Blaster. All the dirtbikes went liquid almost 30 years ago.
