so far the only cost that really surprised me. is the price you have to pay for stainless an-6 hose ends. it is going smoothly other then I still have not decided where I can put the 2 shift controls. I used the original mount that had the throttle and shifter for two throttles. 294370294371

You gonna have to cut the extra crap off the clamp bracket to use those jack plates? What is that stuff for if anyone cares to enlighten me. Looks good BTW. You using the 300XS's?

davemvegas

I already cut both my motors to fit the bobs machine jack plate on my stratos. I have no idea what the extra 2 holes on the port clamp are for. my latest hurdle is finding a good spot for my shifters. I have both throttles in the original throttle/shifter location. that area is not wide enough for 4 handles so I paired up the throttles in that spot. now I need a comfortable and tasteful place to mount the shifters. 294473

The mounting boss with the two holes on the port clamp bracket were originally for a power steering pump mount.
Mercury dropped the idea by 2000 year model or earlier.
Don't know why they are still on the brackets. Maybe cheaper then changing the patterns or plans for something in the future.
As you found, either have to cut the bosses off or use spacer plates for them to fit on most jack plates.

I'd pair up your shifters where they are and install a split foot throttle. Once you get used to using a foot throttle, you'll realize how much better control you have in the turns. Hand throttles are great for offshore racing when you split the throttle/driving duties, but they suck when you drive solo. It's impossible to run a cat hard in the turns with hand throttles. When used in conjunction with a left dead pedal or foot trim, you can stabilize yourself well in the rough and they work great there also. I've never understood hand throttles in high performance pleasure boats..........

got some more things done. other motor is mounted. capalano helm is in. and all hoses are run to the latham side ram steering. I have decided to go with the n-control dual side mount shifters. waiting for them to get here then see best place to mount them. I almost went with the foot throttle suggestions. but I think the convenience of being able to leave the dock and other tight places standing up. the hand throttles are worth the extra money and mounting work.294735

finally have working shifters and throttles. would have liked to put the n-control shifter a little lower. there is no space between panel and fuel tank so it had to install where it is. just waiting on tie bar to get here and I still have to run fuel and oil hoses. other then that it is about done.295055295056 shifters are hard to see in the dark shadow. they are red anodized and match the steering wheel and switch bezels nicely.

well Joe.we will see soon. never had 2 optiturds on one boat before. so far the 300xs has not done for me what the 280 on my vegas did. you stab a 280 and it hauled all the way to the 7800 limiter. a single 300xs is a dog to 3200 then hits the power until shortly after 6000 it is done. I sure hope that 2 of them will bring back the fast boat feel.

The twins will be a HUGE improvement! You can also get noticeable gains in acceleration with DBR's Stage I kit for your Optis if you still want more acceleration - even with the twins.

have it running but with the alarm going off. I threw in the towel on trying for tomorrow. I have a full day of clean up to do after I find the alarm problem. the port motor has steady alarm with key on and motor running or not. starboard has one beep when you turn key on like it should.

vnemous
03-29-2014, 09:49 PM
are you running smartcraft guages Dave?

Bash the alarm with a large hammer :D

davemvegas
03-29-2014, 11:48 PM
no smartcraft. the boat had lavorsi analog gauges with the single motor. I pulled the boat apart and took it to Wildman. he put in a second set of matching gauges and ran new harnesses to the back of boat for me. so I am thinking the issue is something I done back at the motor. I did unplug all the sensors 1 at a time with no change. I just need to take a break and start fresh and I am sure it is something simple. I run one of my 300xs motors on my stratos with omc analog gauges. it took me a couple of days to get the alarm to work right on it. but I did get every gauge to work and the alarm worked right also. Mike are you coming back for river ranch? you should try to make it down for it or the keys run in may.

davemvegas
03-31-2014, 12:11 AM
thanks Charlie (mrcrsr) for bringing the ddt by today. turned out to be the map sensor out of range by small amount. that caused a solid beep tone weather motor was running or not. Charlie also saved me from trying to modify my new n-control shifter. i was not aware the on the port side with a left spinning lower unit. that the shifter actually pushes lever back where reverse is on a standard case. motors are rigged and running. just need to clean up the inside rigging a little and put the seats back in. i am thinking about 4 hours from being done. ( i have thought that for the last 2 days)

When you need batteries take a look at these. I just put a set in my boat. Baddest group 24's you will find. Made by Northstar with a 4 year replacement warranty. The Opti needs a lot of juice to start. 1000 MCA minimum.

The trim hoses all have steel ends on them and there going to rust up in no time
what I really don't like is the steering hoses ...... seems like someone installed the wrong type of ends on them (also steel ) but not designed
for the hose you put them on to ....
if one of the ends blow off you can really get yourself hurt

after going out yesterday I am unsure if it is a better boat now. the good.. mid range and top speed is awesome. fuel mileage is still very good. The bad....sits in the water like a bobber. slow speed steering is a non function. getting on plane is a struggle.

the really bad. I ordered 2 pistons and sleeves today. parts seem to be slim to none for the 300xs motor. so I am guessing they are hard to break. I tore it up in about 4 hours. I did locate the parts today so it should be back together for this sunday.

I think I am going to move both batteries to the front. and not fill up both 58 gal tanks to ride to the local hang out like I did yesterday.

not sure of the cause but #1 stuck so hard it yanked the rod out of it. #6 looks good on top of piston but side is gouged up bad. really did not hurt the block much. I have 2 sleeves on the way and 2 pistons ordered. also need 1 rod. crank is unhurt. the only thing I see that may be the cause is the 2 center mains were full of lake muck. maybe 1 and 6 was not getting oil thru the supply line fittings. the are small. I am pulling the other mud motor apart to give it a good cleaning before I run it. depends how fast parts get here which powerhead will go on it first.

the other mud motor I am pulling apart to clean is not the starboard motor. I am running the original 2007 motor on starboard. the 2013 port motor is the one that broke. I have a match to it that I am pulling apart to clean. I may run it while I am waiting on sleeves. I should have taken both apart before running either of them. I pulled the plenums off and blew out what seemed to be all of the lake muck inside. but after taking apart the broke motor yesterday there was a lot of muck in the center main bearings.

Dont forget to put them in breakin mode. You can also check oil flow doing this.

I did put the port motor in break in mode. ( the one that broke ) It had alarm issue so I put in in break in to be sure there was no air in oil line. alarm turned out to be map sensor.

ran it fri and Saturday at river ranch. other than lake muck plugging up the pee hole ( on motors ) a couple of times. it ran great. I moved both optima batteries to the bow. also added trim wedges. planes out much better now.297049297050

Looks great on the water! Looks like all your hard work has paid off! I added Bennet Sport Tabs as tunnel tabs to my 23MTR - they were a HUGE help getting on plane AND staying on plane at very low speeds. I'd always just run them all the way up (I set them level with the tunnels) once I was running above 30mph. Smart decision moving the batteries forward under the bow - that's where mine were mounted also in the 23MTR (I'm also mounting them there on the re-rig of my 28). You might think about moving your trim pumps forward under the bow also, if the CG doesn't get to your liking. I've heard a lot of the guys that raced offshore with 28s back in the day ran them forward, along with the batteries. I know I would have liked to have more weight forward in my 23MTR if I would have kept it - and that was with 435# 200XSs on the back, not 501# 300XSs! I don't know if you run much in rough water, but if you do, you may want to think of a ballast tank up under the bow - then you can dump that forward weight when you're on the smooth stuff so it doesn't affect your top speed! Again, nice job on the re-rig - you've now got a great looking boat that RUNS as well as it looks!

I am new to these optis. I did not realize that my analog temp gauges read the temp at the compressor. so when I noticed temp on port motor go to 160 and starboard barely above 100 a few mins after putting boat in. I started at thermostats and both looked clean. pulled hose that run from adaptor to compressor and had good flow in and out of compressor. that is when I realized that motor was not overheating only the compressor was. it happened on other motor later that day after docking in shallow water. I am thinking that I should open pee holes up to a 1/4 inch so they wont plug so easily.

thanks for the positive comments. I am still unsure if I did the right thing going to twins. I really think I may have killed my cheap boating by upping the maintance cost. I sure opened the door for double the trouble.

not sure if that would work what about the filter. Get your butt to the Largo run you won't regret it and they got a Burger King right in town maybe you could pull a shift or 2 down there.

Your compressor strainers are clogged.
Read this:
http://www.screamandfly.com/showthread.php?227094-How-To-Thread-w-Pics-Cleaning-your-Optimax-compressor-cooling-water-strainer

Somehow the pics went missing. There is a cooling line that runs between the bottom of the port side fuel rail and the block on the port side low. The plastic fitting that screws into the block need to be removed. That fitting is a strainer. Its plugged.

I read your thread on the strainer before. that why I pulled that hose off on the compressor end. I got the bright idea to suck on the hose to see if strainer was plugged. got a mouthful of swamp water. then I started motor and water flowed out hose fine. hooked it back to compressor and pulled compressor discharge hose that runs to pisser. that is when I figured out pisser was clogged. cleaned pisser with paper clip and temp stayed at 145 all day. I think plugged pisser only stops water flow thru compressor. that is why I think I should drill pee hole out bigger for less chance of clogging.

This is correct. Shells like to catch in there, as well as small pebbles. This only affects compressor temp. That is the first place to check if you have a compressor overtemp.

Dave I played with the hole size of the dump (pisser) the motor is very sensitive to
Pressure change... But I was running a smaller water pump on the 2.5 case...

All your hard worked payed off!!!It was nice to see the boat in the water with a nice pair on it..
I opened up some new pee holes for my motors.. One of the reasons was so i could see that both were peeing good.
Got them both peeing to the inside. The stock pee holes seemed to restrict the flow and I didn't like one peeing on the wing plate!!

I would just say that if the pisser was clogged, the strainers could probably use a good cleaning. Even though you were able to suck water through it, might still be 2/3 clogged.

For someone who isn't sure about going to twins, you sure seemed like you were enjoying that boat! Looks great by the way. I think once you get over the initial expense and get it all dialed in, you'll be more than happy to have all that extra power in your hands. Where did you get that swim step on the back? Would love to buy one for my Skater, but I have a tunnel tab. But the way yours is designed, it looks like I could put it over the top of my tab and still keep the tab. Might have to see if Chaz can fab one up ;)

my boat had 2 swim steps. I do not need the other one I have. you will need to have it powder coated. you are welcome to it. it would be easier if you or someone could stop by and grab it. if not pm me your shipping info I will send it to you.
