Hi.. my lower unit locked up a while back.. it a 3.0 Xri 225 Xri the year is 96.I am wondering how hard it is to pull apart and what tools you will absolutety need to get apart.. it locked idle. When iI pulled the drain plug it was full of metal.. I do have the manual on this lower unit but also hoping for insight from guys who have done this before.. the do's and donts on this .. any guidance on this would be greatly appreciated.. thanks brett

Its probably not cost effective to buy the tools if your just doing one. Have a dealer take it apart.

At least $1000- $1500 in tools from Mercury. The 3.0 cases are more difficult then others to assemble correctly. Not the best one to learn on unless you have someone who knows what the are doing holding your hand.
Parts are real expensive for these gearcases. Would be a shame to spend all the money and not have it set up correctly. You could have thousands of dollars tied up into it and have it scatter.
Send it to someone who does them all the time.

Buy a good used one. If you find one with the wrong length shaft I can cut and respline it still in the lower. 125$ plus shipping. Can also make it longer with a stub shaft and adapter. You have options.
