All you guys that tow big boats.
What would be the best choice of mid 1990's GM pickup to be towing around 10,000 lbs on a regular basis? GM 2500 or 3500, dually or not. I would assume that the 5.7 gas motor is too small so which is better : the 6.5 turbo diesel? or the 454 gas motor? 4x4 or 2WD?
Thanks

Ford F350 with power stroke diesel!:D :p ;)

Anybody I have ever talked to about the 6.5 Turbo Chevrolet said that it couldn't pull a sick whore off the pot... The 454 makes decent power but either get 5mpg or wear slap out trying to pull that much weight.

Tongue weight will decide whether or not to get a dually and they only come in 3500 series trucks.... no such thing as a 2500 Dually.

Check out the new 6.0 liter Turbo Diesel from Ford or go witht eh tried & true 7.3 Powerstroke. You won't be sorry.

He wants a Chevy:D...LOL
Just giving you Ford fans a hard time:)
I dont know alot about the 6.5L Chev Diesel I do know that the 454 is going to drink some fuel and the diesel will have alot better tork.
I have the 2002 Duramax,Edge power module,K&N filter and 4"exast. If anything even start to get close to me I will just boost my module up to 120HP. Dont need to at this point, it screams:D

Yeah,
I would prefer a GM but maybe I will have to take a closer look at a used Ford if their diesel is so good. How about Dodge?

I work on all type's of vehichal's and they all have there little problems. Bottom line is preference. Ford guys will say Ford is the best. Dodge guys say Mopar rules!!!! So on and so forth:rolleyes:

Get what you find the best deal on and you will be happy:) I wouldnt leave home without a 4X4 though. And unless your hauling horses or cattle I dont think you'll need the dually

Fords bigger trucks for the durability. theyre tough but not for the comfort on long hauls.

Definately a new dodge with a cummins for ultimate power with a simple mod. dont know about the comfort factor.

Chevy 3500 duramax 4 tire model for ultimate in long haul comfort for pulling everything but the heaviest 13000+ 5th wheels. then you would need the extra set of tires.

go with a diesel!!!!!!!!!!!!! gas = slow and underpowered when hauling

heck bob is that all you got? :) to bad, because when a chevy pulls up next to me in my stroke, i leave it on the 50hp, but if another stroke or a good running dodge pulls up next to me, thats when i got 3 more to go! 50, 80, 140 or the tire shredding 180+hp at the turn of a knob. :D

i have not run it at a track yet, but a buddy of mine runs 15.30's and i roll him pretty hard. like 4 or 5 truck lenghs.

ford, chevy or dodge it does not matter, just as long as it smokes like a son of a bitch, when your rolling past those goffy little jap cars.:D oh yea, the best is when blast past them and there on your right, with there window down.:D :D :D

Just curious?? I do Transmissions for a living and You must have the E4OD in your truck. Have you installed the shift kit to firm it up a bit?
What else have you done to yours besides the module to make her run so good?

Hey Bob, wasnt' that YOUR tow rig on display @ the Mn. State Fair a few years back? THE BOSS TRUCK OF AMERICA!! Remember that thing!? :D

i'm not certian on the numbers on the trans in my truck, it's whatever came with them in 2000.

i installed a suncoast torque converter (400 less stall), stiffer valve body springs and a acumalater valve with a o-ring. the chip i have also firms up the shifts quit a bit. infact in i have it set on the 50hp setting, which is for towing and i'm unloaded it will hurt your neck it shifts so hard. :D i also have 4" exhaust from the tubro back (bully dog) and i'm kicking around the idea of propane

i friend of mine has a kick ass stroke that runs 12.60's with propane. he also has nos on it, but has not sprayed it yet. it puts 1450 (torque) to the rear tires.

Barefoot Bob
02-04-2003, 10:22 PM
and the RV stall converter was a good choice. It gets the tork to the tires where you want it. I will need to back mine off to 60 HP when towing. I to my 5th wheel with my boat behind(13000 pounds) And the EGT will get to high if I crank her up.

So..... You have a turbo on you powerstroke;) Thats where your getting all that power:D The supplier that set me up with all my goodies told me they set up a guys Ford. He doesnt tow, he just wants to have the baddest truck on the road. The put a $2000.00 turbo on it and all kinds of other goodies and nothing can touch it on the street.

There is a guy in town here with one like mine, only two years older(2000 model) He has been messing with his since he got it. He is running high 12's at the strip and doesnt have propane yet.

I have heard nothing but bad about the old 6.5 GM diesel. It is gutless too. Go 454 if you have to have a GM, but a diesel will pull that weight much better and cheaper. I like the ford myself, and have one too. Not the best ride, but it does the job. Pops has a 2001 F250 PSD and he says the new model rides way better. The Cummins is a great motor and gets a hair better mpg as it is smaller. I'm told the PSD pulls a little better with big 5th wheels. Not knowing about the new GM yet.

I would recommend you try to get a new direct injection turbo diesel if you can swing it. That is the PSD from '95 up and the new Duromax. Not sure what year Cummins went to it. Much smoother, better mpg & power, and you can chip it.

from my experiance at work. we have all ford's and the early to mid 90's tranny's suck pullin weight. but we did get a2001 f-450 that rides alot better then the older 350's weve got,no problems with the tranny yet either. and btw,bob that's sick, they need a shoehorn to get the tailgate out of that crack. just bend one of them heffers over and you'd cure the biggest crackhead!

Barefoot Bob
02-17-2003, 05:47 PM
But they must not have all of their weight on the tail gate. Cause the Ford tail gates that I see come in here on the farm trucks are all bent in half. They always bitch about the cheap tail gates.

Billy kinda looks like the "swamp thing" in that last photo....

MikesXpress
02-27-2003, 09:43 PM
Billy was blue balling it when he got out. It was about 38 degrees and the river had a few ice chunks floating down stream.

The truck kinda slid up the side of the bank when I pulled it out and we watched his cell phone, smokes, and a thermos float around until the level dropped enough to open the doors. Ecellent way to start a Colorado morning of fly fishing?

Hey Brent. You should run that by Sean. He's got a 454 in his truck.
