would this be a good fishin boat motor (bullet boat) reliable, trouble free?

would not be my first choice because of the small charging system they have. promax would be a better option.

Put a bigger gas tank in it,keep your trolling motor charged at all times,:iagree:Tim

They make for a lousy fishing motor unless its a tournament bass boat . Terrible manners under 40 MPH . Great wide open but for low speed stuff there much better choices.

hey thanks fellas i'm looking for a replacement for the 225 promax(17years old)that i've got, your right never had any trouble since new.I thought about moving up to 3 liter 250 but didn't like the weight vs 2.5 .I think i'll check on rebuilding the promax or buying a later low hour model.."good luck huh" i'm glad I posted this thanks again.

Lots of guys running 260's on Allisons. I think it would be fine if you are a guy that likes to get to the fish in a hurry. From what I've seen them Bullets run perty good too. The 3 litres are heavy, real heavy.

I couldnt even keep mine on plane under 25 or so and it really never got going well until 35-40. Beyond that it was unstoppable but I thought it was an awful motor for tooling around the river doing family crap and fishing. The 225's manners are much more in line with a daily driver type boat. I pulled my 3.0 off mine for the 260 just because the 225 3.0 WAS too heavy for my boat but it was much better on the low side than the 260 and got much better mileage. To each his own and for a tournament bass boat the 260 is a great motor I'm sure.

i owned all and fished most of my 67 years young:rolleyes: i have a 300x on my Bullet now its the least likable of the 225PMAx , 260 and 280. 280 was second to the promax for being reliable 260 is third;) 3.0 is just too Big:nonod: 260 did not drink as much gas as the 300x by any means

My 260 idles great, cruises fine and when needed its a screamer, there is no sound like it. If I were in your shoes myself I would rebuild that promax, I had a 225x, they are great motors. Good luck! Kurt

Either rebuild the PM or buy a newer one. With all the low end shifting and idling you are doing, you won't regret it. And you won't have to worry about rebuilding, nicasail, pre-mix, and all that not so fun stuff.

yea but with a 260 and bag of tools and electronics, you can wear there a$$es out when ever you want, that is the reason I quit fishing,260 in the blood:cheers:Tim

And that's the point, if you read his initial hopes it was reliable and trouble free. Guy probably wants to do more fishin than fixin. Nobody is doubting the 260 is faster, but you can make a 225PM just as fast if not faster with some mods. If you want to go fast and get there and bak home every time, fill up an oil tank here and there, and shift smooth as silk when the wind is pushing you into the dock or the weeds, the PM is the way to go.

i agree my 2 260's were fast but the battery situation and a few other negatives make the promax the better of the two for a fishing mota . the 280 was ok its just did not like idling when i had SVS and 300 electrics on it but when i went back to stock stuff it was much better. but ive owned 5 Promax's and building another one with a few mods( not many) just cleaning up the exhaust and raising the ports just a tad and a few other not to hairy items it will run, start, idle and be reasonable on fuel its the way to go for fishing

Pretty much agree with tha PM deal but I will say this. Tha very first 260 I had was great all around at any rpm 'cept for tha little chargin' stuff. Was a long time ago though. So long ago it had tha vertical butterfly horn....

Tournament fishing ...........Taking off at first safe light fishing for 8 hours pulling in to your first spot and catching a fish putting him in the box setting the live wells on auto so fish stay alive. starting and stopping outboard 15 to 20 times a day in that 8hr period...So I think and know the 225 steel bore promax will out live and be a much better fishing motor then the 260.Dont get me wrong that 260 is a bad umbra I have had both it will not out do a PM on a tournament boat day in and day out

OK, I gotta ask. We dont really have tournament bass fishing here. I only fish for bass here when its not Salmon or Steelhead season and I know very few people who actually make a point of fishing for bass on purpose. Its almost seen as a trash fish. What do you guys do with all that bass you catch in a tournament? Catch and release or do you bring it home? I know I probably filet up 50 lbs of bass in a season and I think its the best eating fish this side of halibut but my friends think I'm crazy. Too many bones and not enough meat. Theres just about no one fishing for it where I go.

I build 260s on a monthly basis for Hi Per fishing hulls ( Bullet, Allys ) they are great motors and my customers love em , they do have a fuel hunger and a weaker than average charging systems. I find most that have the Hi Per type fishing hulls fuel prices and consumption is the last of their worries kinda like the guy that drives a Lambo, when you can afford that kind of car who cares about 10 MPG, LOL......I'd opt for a steel sleeved motor myself , longer maintenance intervals...........
