Hi guys Sorry I posted a reply instead of a post. Newcomer here to posting but I have followed for 2 yrs. About time I tried to participate. My rig is a 97 2.5 offshore SVS on a 21 foot eliminator daytona tunnel. My question is, why not punch the key to prime a couple of times while coming from wot down thru 6k to cool and oil? I have had and seen so many v6's lean-stick a piston in this situation. Maybe the primer doesn't do enough to matter, or somthing else. What do you think guys? Jay Smith, Instigator,Balzy, Liquifly, Toffen? Thanks guys rick martin , Whidbey Island, 3 miles offshore from seattle.

I have done it a few times when coming off a hard pass. Usually got my hands full keeping in a straight line without reaching for the key too yet though.

Thanks Balzy My daytona is pretty tame during the backoff so i could do this if i want, i just dont know for sure weather it does good or harm. rick

is there a prime on a EFI motor????

trace the yellow/black stripe wire and see where it goes...

10% richer than whatever your box is set at when you push in the key. Just like it will close the choke on a carb motor. Just push it in while you're idling once, you will be able to tell right away. Uck, Uck, sputter, sputter. At least it did on my A65 and my A48's. Haven't tried it with the new 849849-A6 yet.

I have a better idea.( not really) Why doesn't mercury just make a decent ECU that can run the engine without problems? Considering how much they cost and the sensors it has to monitor I don't see why they keep changing to all diffent kinds of ECUs. I think that they should have figured it out back several unit ago.
Considering they are making Performance motors not fishing motors they should have done this.
While I'm dreaming why don't they sell it at a reasonable cost too.
Don't worry about your post. The old one used to trick me into posting a new thread instead of answering one like I thought I was doing.

mercury PRODUCTION 2.5 EFI motors do not utilize the enrichener/system (the yellow/black wire is not connected).

SOME HI-PERF EFI motors also DO NOT use the enrichener system (serial number 0D936999 and below)

Serial number 0D936999+ until the switch to the 280 motors, DO use the enrichener system.

The 280 motors (motorola ecu) DO NOT use the enrichener system.

The easiest way to see if your motor utilizes an enrichener system is to see if there is a yellow/black wire coming from your wiring harness (on the motor) that goes to a little terminal block, which then goes to the ECU.

hope this clears things up! I even learned something! :)

BTW, techno, you should do some research on the PCM555 control module the mercury racing is using on the 300X, 200XS, and 225X motors, the module is more advanced then most ECU's that the auto industry uses. Unfortunately, the cost of the motors isnt coming down anytime soon... :(

Does my '89 200 XRi have the enrichening effect with push of the key? I just bought it. Once it's started, as long as it has a little neutral throttle, it doesn't seem to care whether or not I pulse the "push choke". I love the EFI, I just don't know a lot about it. -chad

I don't know about the production motors or your '89 200 XRi. I was talking about my "96" 2.5 EFI 260 horn motor. I don't remember if my "96" 200 EFI production motor did it or not.

I dont think the 2.4L EFI production (non-bridgeport motors) used the enrichening/choke either...

the 2.4L EFI system was basically a predecessor to the 2.5L EFI systems

I was scorching pistons all the time till I started doing this on my 89 XP.
Havent had one go scince then.
After every pass I nail the key till I am below 5 grand.
Works for me.

Sounds to me like those of us who can, should hook up a foot switch to the yellow/black stripe wire to stomp on when backing off the throttle.

I'm going to check my wiring this weekend for sure. If I have the yellow/black stripe wire, I'll let you all know what I come up with.

A pedal sounds easier than reaching for the key.
