I am thinking about adding a jack plate on my 1979 Baja Br180 . What is a good starting point for set back . I was thinking around six Inches. Comments would be great.

That's not a padded hull is it? What motor?
I would guess a 5" CMC or Vance would be a good place to be. A good bow lifting prop really helps on that open bow. Running a bow cover helps too for top speed.
Double, triple, quadruple check your transom before anything.

If you're looking to buy a jackplate in the 6" range I have a TH Marine Pro High Jacker I'm going to remove from my Mirage that I will sell. Feel free to contact me through P.M. or email(
[email protected]) or call/text 570-660-4791.

Yeah not a padded hull. Motor is a Merc 175 carbed.

Just be careful jacking the motor up too high. Go in small increments. You don't want to blow it out and hook it.
That is a cool boat. 65+ is very real with that power.

I had a 79 Baja 180ss for a few years with a 200 evenrude. Basically the same hull as yours, only a closed bow. Ran no jackplate, a 5" and a 12" plate. The 12" got the most speed, but suffered on hole shot severely. It was only on for a few outings. I ran 72 with the 5" plate and the motor 4" down. Any higher and the boat didn't want to plane out very well(probably the omc more than height). It liked a bow lifting prop and the nose of the boat as high as I could get it. With No plate, the boat drove great, just wouldn't go over 62 MPH. Great all around Hull, just hard to drive at speed with all the trim needed to fly it.

I agree with u on the amount of trim needed to fly these things . I picked up a Cmc 5.5 inch plate and solid mounts .

I think that's the same plate I have. I didn't have solid mounts when the motor was on my Baja, but it needed them. Those two things should help you gain some MPH.
