I may need to replace my trim ram and have not had any luck finding any info on S&F on doing this. Fist I'm not 100% sure on the correct names, so maybe thats slowing down my search... I have always had a small leak wear the lower hyd. hose enters the trim ram, once I removed the hose I found out why.. it looks to have been stripped and JB welded it back together.

But how difficult is it to remove and replace this ram? The mids are 20" offshores mids (*1995) that don't appear to have even been apart. I may be able to tap a larger thread and reduce it with a brass fitting depending on how difficult it would be to remove and replace the ram.

I have never taken one apart on the boat but I think it would be no problem. You will need to raise the motor high enough to get at the top bolt that goes through the ram. Unbolt it and push it out . Then there are two cover plates, one on each side for the bottom. Remove the cover plates and there is a pin under it on each side with a threaded hole in it, 1/4-20 I believe. Thread a bolt in there and pry the pin out. Make sure trim lines are unhooked and you should be able to get it out of there. Wil

My concern is the aluminum cast mid-section and the bolts. While removing the small 8mm bolt holding the hydraulic hose in place I noticed it was "bound" together pretty good. A stainless bolt and cast aluminum is not a good mix over time. That little bolt snapped pretty easy.. just worried about the larger ones doing the same.

The motors and drives are already removed, easy access

Fresh water it should come apart fairly easy . I've done several salties and they do suck !

Basically one through bolt at top of ram going through the swivel bracket and two side covers for the two pins located about middle of ram housing and get the lines loose and it will come out. Wil

As a rule not bad to do but salt can change that in a hurry.

the top cylinder pin is held in by an aluminum bar attached with
to the mid with two phillips head screws.. how the heck to remove
these with out stripping?
,
the mid pin(s) cover plates came off easy, but how do you pull the pins out?

It its just stripped, can you repair it with something like a timsert? A well greased slow drill bit and tap will trap the scraps.

This is the top pin, I looked on the microfiche and it does not show the top cap with an aluminum strap holding the cap on like this. Is this "stock"?

I'm thinking I should just drill the heads off and grind them flush, if this strap is still needed I can rotate the aluminum bar than drill and re-tap.

WOW - That was a choir... The lower was never in salt water for extended periods other than a couple races, but it was a pain to tear it apart. I was trying to remove the mid cylinder pins while keeping the unit on the boat, one came off very easy.. the other not so much. I ended up pulling the mid and breaking it down piece by piece until the last mid pin was left in the mid. Than I needed a BIG press and some heat to push it out.. approx time 8hrs for the job for a first timer.

Now I need a ram cylinder rebuild kit... any one?

Do you mean the trim ram seal kit? I just had two of them replaced.
