www.overtons.com has control cables on sale big time. Type "outlet" for the promotional code and save some big bucks. Almost bought them for a no good reason. Merc cables for $20 for a 20 footer.
They didn't have any steering cables for my POS Vector, did they?
Apparently, those don't exist anymore....

What kind of system do you have?
It's the original system (1981 Vector), and it's in pretty good condition, but one cable is sticky. They tell me that these cables are not replacable, and I need to buy a whole new steering system.... That doesn't make me too happy...
Anyway, it's a Detmar, but apparently there are two different kinds... and I (of course) have the disposable one...
..or am I being lied to???

Detmar is short for Detroit Marine, you may be being misinformed, It may be possible to order replacement parts. Detmar's number is 1-313-831-1155 (at least it used to be) their tech people are top notch, but they sell through dealers, get your P/Ns from them and then get it from your local dealer.

Hi Gp,
Ever thought of "repairing" the steering cable?
Here's an interesting link, might work for you:

We do handle Detmar. But I would check out the luber link. Some folks do that to brand new cables and get some improvement.

Sometimes the cable fix works and sometimes it doesn't. I think it depends on how much it's been forced against the obstruction. The cables have an inner liner and this becomes wadded up as the crap builds up inside and it's used anyway. The worse it's wadded, the less likely the lubin' is gonna fix it.
I'll check it out, but I think it's from rust... I've had pretty bad luck with getting information from marine dealerships around here.. Is there any way (other than tearing it out of the boat and bringing it with me) to ensure I get the correct one? I see no part number on it.......

That is probably the best way to tell. Email it to the shop, and Barb will get to work on it.
Right now it's crammed away behind a car, four motorcycles, and about 50 hockey sticks... Assuming the cable can be replaced, appoximately what is it gonna cost me?? If not, what kind of price am I looking at for a new steering system??
Thanks.
.. I think it's a 13' cable..

I'm looking to sell the Ride-Glide rack steering in my Sterling if you're interested. 16' cables, helm, wheel and brackets. I don't know what it's worth (that's who you want to buy from :D ).
Going hydraulic.

I think 16' cables would be too long in a 17' boat, but thanks for the offer......
I'm thinking about welding a tiller handle on it.......
