Be sure to check into Costa Rica. Not so commercial as Cancun, and the people are extremely friendly. Also, not too expensive.

Peaks in the middle of September and ends in November. Go here
http://www.caribwx.com/
and go to the hurricane page for previous years. Very quiet everywhere that time of year. If you want people around then go to an all-incl. or Paradise Island.
My Favorite spot is Bequia but, I think you need a boat to get there. How about chartering a boat and doing the British Virgin Islands? It's cheaper at that time of year and all the Islands are only a few miles apart. Food is great, and boat sex is the best.
DON"T GO TO ST. VINCENT. They'll kill before Mr. Cleans friends get a chance to bomb'em.

Sorry Eauto but, that is known as the toilet bowl of the Carribean.
Have tried to anchor there and couldn't get it to hold because there is so much garbage on the bottom. At night, the place is run by the crackheads.Go to St. Johns and hang out with the Hippies or better yet the BVI s, but stay away fro St.T.

sometimes i always think maybe it would be better to stay somewhere close and save money, than you could put it towards the boat:D

When I go somewhere I don't want to just sit on the beach or get lead around by some bored tour guide. So, I recommend Chartering a boat in the British Virgin Islands. Be it sail ( Cats are the cats meow for sail) or motor ( They rent trawlers down there) it's a great way to cover all the bases, and the Islands. The BVI's are a circle of Islands, centered by the Sir Francis Drake Channel, that provide superb shelter for cruising. It's like being on a land locked lake except that you are in the middle of the Carribean. Island hopping is easy because they are only a couple of miles apart Max. ( Except if you want to go to Anegada - 20miles) and you can always see your next destination. In October it's pretty quiet so, you can get into all the best anchorages and have them almost to yourself. The most popular bays have mooring balls ( they charge during the season ( $20) but you may not have to pay in October) and a beach bar or restaurant.
The best part of the BVIs is that they have real food, steak burgers, chicken breasts, not just chicken parts like the rest of the carribean.
Here are a couple of links to look at:

Search for the Moorings yacht charters
THANKS FOR THE INFO. I WILL CERTAINLY CHECK INTO THE BOAT CHARTERS. THAT REALLY SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT IDEA AND WAY TO GET AROUND THE ISLANDS. AGAIN THANKS

If I was doing it over again I'd go to Kawaii again, but I'd stay longer without spending hardly any more money. Here's how: in Hawaii you can camp on many (most) of the beaches away from the resort areas just by getting a permit ahead of time at the island's county court house. (You can do this by snail mail & phone.) The "public" beaches near the towns have showers etc that are very nice and free to use. Just rent a car for the whole time you are there, its no big deal to find a place to park it.
For the last week, there I'd stay at a hotel or condo.
I'd send my camping stuff ahead by FedEx or UPS and send it and any souveniers back the same way (while I was staying at the condo) so I didn't have to check or carry anything on the plane.
My cousin that was stationed there at Barking Sands tried to explain this to me before we went, but I didn't understand the details until we were there and only stayed a week.
