i bought a 2.5 carb motor after my 2.4 was stolen in april and been having fun but problems too....first the lower unit **** the bed now i have a borrowed lower from a friend who reads these posts every now and then, the next time out i was running at wot and she died a slow mushy throttle death, and came off plane, it wasnt hot and didnt make a sound, so i hit the key she fired right up reved good sounded good but wouldnt plane out, it had power to around 4 grand then just hit the wall trying to plane over, so i figured high side of the stator went bad, after doing a compression test, all were within a pound of each other 136, replaced the stator and tryed again....same thing, wouldnt plane out, changed the switch boxes while i was at the lake.....same thing, was looking at the trigger wiring and it didnt look so good so i changed it just because of the wires......same thing hit the wall trying to plane out, so i took off all the coils and found when i pulled off the rubber caps 4 coils fell apart all over the bench, AHA this must be it!!, changed those and went back to the lake.......same thing hit the wall trying to plane out so i changed the flywheel went back to the lake.........same thing wouldnt plane out, the next day i pulled the brass plugs off the jets in the carb bowls and the top carb didnt have any fuel in it, hhmmmmm, turned the key on and let the electric fuel pump fill the bowls and watched to make sure fuel was coming out of the bowls where i had removed the brass plugs, and there was fuel on all three carbs, so i put the brass plugs back on the jets and turned on the fuel pump and the upper carb was flowing fuel out the front so i pulled the carb opened it up and the seat had unscrewed all the way out and was holding the float down, put it back together correctly and headed for the lake and she planed out and hauled ass, so much for my high side of the stator theory huh, i always had the cowling on it when the key was on so i never saw the fuel running out of the carb and fuel never puddled up on the cowling pan to give me a clue, well i just thought i would share this with ya for what it's worth, OH YA i forgot i also removed the exhaust divider looking for cracks before i did the carbs, oh well live and learn it may not be what ya think it is causing the problem huh? piss poor trouble shooting on my part. :)

have fun every one and be safe !!!

Well, at least you checked out everything electrical. I bet that you eliminated several future problems. Sounds like the motor is in great shape now.

ya i guess your right, when i had the exhaust divider of i found hydrilla and a piece of what looked like old impeller fragments in the water holes going to the cylinder wall area of the block :) that should help any cooling problems in the future too.

have a good one,

Electrical will drive you nuts. I had a fuel delivery problem which was extremely odd; but anyway I went through the entire electrical system and at 6 different times was sure I had found the problem because the electrical part failed ohm tests. The only way to do it is with a DVA and test tank. All the parts I bought for nuttin could have easily paid for both. I did learn a lot though and I guess that is priceless. The best part is wondering if your motor will ever run again after you've had it apart. hehe David

so you been there too huh, i am usually on top of this stuff
helping others but man when it came to mine i just didnt look hard enough got all brain dead sticking to my thought of the stator because that happened to me before on an EFI bridgeport i had so that was in my head, it took me two days of running back and forth the lake before i looked toward any kind of fuel trouble and i had two buddys that live in st. cloud florida telling me to look into fuel problems, but hell after i did all that i had no choice ha ha ha ha, hey man it's all good ya know? i'll always be learning years from now too, so heres to us do it yourselfers !!!!

My first mistake was treating symptoms instead of fixing problem when I first got the motor. I wasn't getting over 4ooo RPM's when I first put it on. This was clearly a fuel problem. So I installed a Holley Red pump and it then wouldn't turn over 5000 RPM's and I never dreamed that it could still be a fuel problem. So I started trouble shooting the electrical system. Of course just about everything failed the tests "sort of" so I began replacing parts. A year later I revisted fuel; by-passed the mechanical pump and disconnected the oil injection. The best part of this is after rebuilding the carbs she ran like a rapped ape for one pass and then was right back to five grand...hehe. Now finally that it is running right I know a 2.4 200 isn't enough motor for my boat...so I'm selling it this winter and am buying another one. David

keep up the good work david!!!!and may all your motors kick butt!!! :) by the way what actually caused it you rebuilt the carbs and bypassed the mechanical pump and disconnected the oil injection, good for one pass and back to 5000, then ya got it right...... but what was it ya didnt say?

Bob Garone told me to rebuild my carbs...for the cost of carb kits and the time it takes it was well worth it and Rocketman and US1 told me to loose the oil injection and mechanical fuel pump. I was holding out on the oil injection because I thought it was improtant to know what the motor ran like stock. Plus I was a little scared hehe. The thing that really sucks though is that now AI have nothing to wotrk for except more HP...and there is no way I'm going to modify this 2.4. David

man david, let me tell ya when i went from a 2.4 modified to the 2.5 it was a night and day difference in the power, there is no substitute for cubic inches!!!! and the modified 2.4 had everything done to it, and this 2.5 is a 200 carb regular old powerhead and its got more umph!!

so what brings ya to go 3 liter? whats the advantages/disadvantages of your situation/rig,set-up to get ya to go that way? no bad thoughts here!! just trying to gather info :)

My rig is very heavy and needs a lot of bottom end grunt. I do a lot of boating and skiing and it has become easy to extract a good amount of power from a relatively inexpensive 225 HP motor. David

gottcha !! when ya do change over let us know in a posting your thoughts and performance boosts as for general overall performance of the rig as a whole :)

Talon.did i understand you right?.....the 2.5 200 hp carb has more power than you efi Bridgeport?..any speed difference.Thanks...just curious...may need to repower my 3200 lb barge.currently has Efi BPs
