Had to sell my GPS speedo because of monetary needs, so now I have mounted the crap plastic speedo pitot. I mounted closer to the center line than the stock location because it wouldn't be in the water once the boat got up on the pad. My question is can it change the props effectiveness since it is now pretty much in line with the outer blade tips? Its about 3 ft away from the blade tips (I have a 6" jack plate) but in line with them. Could this adversly effect my performance or is it too small to really notice any difference?

Yeah ..... what he said ..... +1

The location of anything hanging down in the water in front of the prop can have a dramatic effect on the prop ..... especially if it's on the right side of center!!!! I would rather run without any speedometer before I ever use a pickup tube again!!!

Thanks guys for the info. I kind of thought about this right after I mounted it, then I was like " what the hell did I just do?!" But before I reversed my stupid decision I thought I would get some veteran opinions. My boat "should" be capable of 85 to 90 but will probably only be controllable around 75 to 80 (of course I know a lot of that depends on the drivers capability, and I haven't had the boat out yet). Are the GPS speedo apps pretty accurate (guess it has to be more accurate than a pitot)? I have 2 apps on my phone but haven't tried them out yet.

the gps speedo app i have on smartphone is dead on with 3 gps devices i have compared it to. i usually mount speedometer pickups in the bottom of the nearest trash can.

That's probably a good place for it. I may try to get my money back on it (a whole $7). What GPS app do you have (the name of it)? I have an Android phone.
