I have a 89 HST that blows out at about 85mph. I currently do not have a pic of the gearcase. However it looks like a CLE but i'm sure its not. I have tried many different props and heights with all the same results. I have 12inches of setback including the L&S electric jack. Should I just send this out to Bobs Machine and stop messing around? Do the Land and Sea blowout rings work?
Thanks,
JRider

what props are you running and how high are you generally running them in relation to the bottom of the center pod??
Inquiring minds will want to know....

I have ran a 26 mazco RE3, 26 mazco RE4, 28 ET, 28 Merc chopper, and also a 28 merc cleaver. Have had the worst performace with the cleaver...to be expected with this hull though. I have ran with the propshaft centerline anywhere from 1in. below to 2in. above. The gearcase also only has 2 LWP holes...just for information purposes. I believe the case is shorter than a sportmaster.

Does the gearcase have a torque tab on it? I Added one to my CLE and it solved my blowout problem. I was blowing out in the low 80mph range.

yes it does have a torque tab. I have been told it could be a crooked nose cone but just cant see anything wrong with mine???

I run a CLE with a Bob's cone and a torque tab. never blows out. Solid as a rock. I have tried the CLE, a JJ's coned 200, my CLE without the tab, and none of them work. Remember, big heavy boat means big gearcase. I start low and work the plate up till I run out of water without blowing out with my old faithful coned CLE and the tab.
What gear case do you have.

The previous owner told me the (1989 200 case) cone/LWP was done by OPC (Outboard Performance Center). I dont know if they are even in business anymore.

Jeb-
I have a HST and have a variety of gearcases including a sportmaster, CLE, coned CLE..... the problem is the blowout ring, or lack thereof. The sportmasters and the late model CLE have incorporated blowout rings. They work great, I also have a noseconed CLE w/ Torque tab, full size skeg--it blew out at 85 mph until I added a Bob's Blowout ring, now no problem. The only real problem with the Bob's ring is that the props leading edge hits the ring, so I had to make custom thrust washers to push the prop back.

JRider,
Most of the guys posting above are alot more knowledgable than I about this thing but...
Most of last summer, I was blowing out between 88 and 90 on my boat. The stock gearcase would run 96.. The gearcase was shipped back and forth to the shop a number of times.
On the last trip down, it was noticed the factory blowout ring was rounded off. The shop did a nice job of putting it back on and for a happy ending, I ran a best of 98.3..
I feel your pain.., Blowin out is not any fun..

You may want to consider selling your case to a water skier and investing the money in a cle or a sportmaster. your with in a few hundred bucks of a good used cle. I ran my cle to 109 with a 260.
And it carried the bow better than my sportmaster.

124 with stock sportmaster, 115 with stock 200/ bob's cone/tab Stock 200 case with bob's was 6 mph faster, back of the boat was much more stable that with cle. With the sportmaster, rides like it's on rails. 32 labbed merc cleaver. Cle turns the best, far better than the sportsmaster. I start off about 2 inches below the pad and work up to about 1/2 an inch above. Merc drag, warmed up a little.

Do you have a pic of your gearcase? That might help us identify the problem.
I had an HST with an Evinrude 225 and a Bob's lower. It never even gave the slightest hint of blowout at any speed. As far as I know HSTs really aren't the slightest bit prone to blowouts.

No, sorry I do not have a pic. I would take one but I do not have imediate access to the boat (in another state). I think I am just going to send my case to Bobs Machine and have him work his magic on it. I talked with him last year about it and he seemed very optimistic that it could be cured.
