I wonder if the OPA would let it run in the class 7, the rules say 21'-22', maybe Uncle Mike Vnemous could chime in on this one.

Trimmed Out, this has already come up in discussion, and several of us would vote "yes" to allow it in class 7. Class 7 is a "work in progress" -and as racers we can "tweak" the rules for the long term betterment of the class. I'd love to see the old 23' come out and play (race)!!

I dont think they should count the swim steps on the back of the Ghost, that would make it 22'.:D
Just wait till I get my Key Largo rigged;)

Is the race set in stone for this weekend? I heard, word of mouth, that the Town of Hempstead was giving the organizers a hard time.
Also, I'm getting pretty interested in this Class 7.
I hope an exception is made for the Ghost. IMO, It will add to the class.

I believe the Europeans do exactly that, they count the running surface only.

Bob, I'm not prepared to race, as much as I'd like to. I don't have the safety equipment and I haven't even splashed the boat yet. Still needs some minor glass work from Sandy. Registration is still open? Thanks for the invite:)

Keith, I just may! Probably going to swap the 2.4 from the Checkmate, slap some epoxy on the big holes, a sheet of plywood on the floor and bring her around Breezy for the races on Sunday.

Its just not as cool. Starflite is not really an ocean boat either. I now have a push to get the Ghost wet. One way or another, I'll be out there.

Only thing about opa that makes no sense is a 60mph speed cap? Whats the reasoning behind that? also why no twin ob class??

I had wondered the same thing....maybe it could have been raised more to like 75 mph ? I'm guessing it has to be for safety reasons....
Fast Shafts
08-21-2013, 06:34 PM
There are two main reasons for the 60 MPH cap.
1) OPA felt it was a safety issue (and Insurance issue), they didn't want these small boats in the ocean having wrecks. OPA felt that if someone wants to go faster, they can step up to class 6-a 70 mph brackett.
2) By keeping the speed at 60, boats with bone stock 200's can race competatively.
Back in June, at the Atlantic City ocean race we didn't hit 60, and won! We all know that in FLAT water, these boats are capable of much higher speeds, however, the ocean does tend to slow us down.
The last twin engine boat to race was a 30 Superboat-in class 5, 75mph bracket.
Hope this info helps.

Bob Thanks for the info I assumed #1 was involved nowadays with the way the legal world has changed.
Was it ever considered to just make the sob event a stock 200 event which will keep the speeds down allow all the boats to compete and then you can remove the speed cap because now you have a natural speed cap? It would probably also lower your insurance costs too while your at it.

Ghost, I also like the idea of a 200,and doing heads up racing with No speed cap! It would also keep the cost to a minimum. Remember the old "F" class (SOB) was ruined by allowing larger engines, and than allowing big block I/O's.
Bayrat, I spoke with several teams, no one objects to a 23 Ghost.
If anyone is interested in racing class 7 next year, please stop by and we can add you to the list for any conference calls or meetings. This class started with 4 boats in Atlantic City and 6 are commited for Long Island. Several projects are being restored for next year. This class is growing!

Factory 1 Single 500 or something like that? Yea the smaller motor makes it safer and sets everyones power even and may the best setup, boat, and team win.
Goodluck to all racing this weekend in LB.

What class would a 28 ghost or 30 superboat with twin outboards fall under??
CLASS 5....single inboard or twin outboard vee bottom to 30ft/ 75mph.
In fact, two 30ft Superboats with twin twin outboards ran in CLASS 5 very competitively for a number of years(#512 SPECIALIZED RACING...and #532 DOCK BLOOD RACING)...there should be a 26ft Sutphen with twin outboards racing this weekend(#599 DIRTY SUTPHEN).Hope to see you at the races!

Nah the boat usually only comes out once a decade (it was like pulling teeth to get it in water for the event). May be able to talk my way into getting it in water more often because it is an awesome boat that isnt used enough. It needs repairs tho because Sandy did some damage

S84, hope to see you out this year. Or possibly laying up a hull to match the race deck I heard was still around. I've got a 250HPDI being built by Bender. With his help and a couple other buddies, one of which is a super fast Merc guy, I anticipate breaking into the 80's. I still have tons of work to get her right, but she's water tight and I'm going to get plenty of seat time this year. What are your plans?
