Mercury SmartCraft fuel/oil

If I have the 84-859743T03 SmartCraft fuel/paddle/oil harness do I have to connect the oil tank to get the SmartCraft fuel gauge to work?

The engine is a Mercury Racing Optimax 200xs 2006 Gen I.

no....they are independent of one another....

Ok, so it is just plug and play? I started going thru the '200xs Optimax Application and Installation Manual' and also opened the package with the harness and it seems to be pink/black to the fuel tank, the 6-pin on the engine's harness and the engine's computer sends information to the fuel gauge via the main 14-pin harness?
