View Full Version : Odd question (can you prop for a lower WOT speed?)

I have a young man who wants to buy my boat which now runs mid 70's pretty easy. The problem is that the young man that wants to buy my boat is 15 and his grandfather wants the boats top speed limited somehow. Right now the boat has a 250xs with a fury 25 prop and i have run the boat up to 75 until the chine walk gets to where I have had enough. Could you simply put a much lower pitch prop on the boat to limit the top speed to say mid 60s? I assume there is no way to limit the engine RPM is there? I know this would cause the boat to operate at a much higher RPM for even modest speeds but, what else could be done to reduce top speed without changing the engine? This is totally not a thread that i would expect to see on here but I figured i would ask to help out the guy who wants to buy my boat.
Thanks
Mike

A low pitch prop should limit speed due to the rev limiter. I guess running on the limiter a lot isn't the best thing for a motor, but it would limit his speed.
My ski prop is stuck at high 40's low 50's with my 115 HO Etec and that's how I send out my nephew.

You could run the motor deeper and re prop it, or somehow find a way to limit the throttle. I've got a 150 that I would trade,, that would be a guaranteed fix. :D

Hahaha, I agree with the lower pitch prop helping with the speed and yes I do think if someone was running on the rev limiter often that would not be wise. Running the motor deeper with lower pitch prop just might slow it down enough but, i wonder how much could speed could be scrubbed while still allowing for somewhat efficient engine use.

Sink the motor deep, change to an aluminum prop......
But what's gramps gonna do when the kid starts readin Scream and Fly??

If it has a hot foot, set the throttle stop for less than wide open. Might take him a little while to figure than one out.

I like this idea best

up here ,he couldn't legally operate the boat anyway at that age!
Probably a throttle stop on the motor also. If not you could add one.

downgrade the motor. the 250 xs should be easy to do that with. plus I feel a kid that age should have to learn a bit about a motor before getting all the fun....maybe its cause I had too.....

If you can raise a rev limiter, someone like simon mite be able to lower it,for you.

if you run the stop bolt out on the hotfoot, i'd put a 23p prop on it so he'll still get on plane and run the rpms where they are supposed to be.

I used to run my VooDoo on the limiter a lot. Old 70 2 cyl Nissan, never minded it.

I slowed down a little bass boat for a guy by setting the trim limit lower. Didn't take much to keep the bow down it a little. Dave
