I'm putting a boat together, it has a 24 gallon in floor plastic tank, which is in good shape. But the boat was sitting for 10 years or more when I got it, and the tank is covered in varnish. Replacement tank is $515.00 + shipping. Sooooo...with acetone, laquer thinner, mineral spirits, ect. running 15+ a gallon I don't want to experiment.

Question. does anybody know, or has anybody had any luck with one chemical over another at dissolving varnish. The gas alone has gotten about 80% of it.

Thanks, Heath

How about a double dose of water and simple green or the purple stuff? Get it close, run a tank of fuel through it, dump a can of sea foam in the next full tank, run that through, change fuel filters and call it good.

I have an old car I have been working on. It has been sitting for almost 20 years. I ran 5 gallons of av gas through it three times. Each time I pumped it back into a 5 gallon plastic can. It ended up depositing some type of sludge in the gas can. I tried a couple different solvents to get it out, and denatured alcohol worked the best.
