Traded my Center Console junker for a much better hulled Bullet 20XD.

Motor on the Bullet was billed as a late 80s early 90s 2.4 175.... Why do I say "billed as"?

Because there are no serial numbers to be found, the clamp has been changed at least twice, no Welch plug that I can find (not behind the electrical panel)

The motor bogs down getting on plane, skips/sputters will running, bogs down going on the trailer.

Top speed is a beelistering 59 mph trimmed out, held to the floor, trying to rip the Hot Foot up, rocking back and forth, down stream with the wind at my back, on a paper plate in a snow storm.

Here are some pictures, what is it that I have?

Check your compression. If that's good, everything else is probably fixable.

Carb part numbers, and vertical or horizontal reeds should allow a good guess as to what it is.

Clean up and systematic diagnosis should get you running.

Gotcha, compression was tested before I pulled it off the lot, 125 across the board.

It did sit awhile before I got it so I'm thinking carbs first, but everywhere I look I need a serial number for the carb kits.

I will go look for the carb numbers.

looks to me like 76-81 mota, has vertical reeds, and first gen head bolt pattern.Look on the heads,There you will find eather a 3 1/8 or 3 3/8.That would be 122ci or 142ci.Smaller size= 150-175 hp. Larger 200 hp chrome bore!.

Outasite, if I may pick your very knowledgeable brain again, where would the "3 /" numbers be at on the head?, I may just be over looking them.

It's been a while but they were right on top by the water cover.BUT,if your motor is a 76-77 it may not have any number, because that was before the 3 3/8 2.4 was built 78------If that old heathen that's got blinker troubles'reads this he MITE be able to remember.:D

Date is printed right on the starter, something 23, 83 whatever it is. So 83-84 150-200.

I hope you are right Capt.

The only thing is Im sure the Guy I got this from put it together from parts in his boat yard, unsure the starter is original.

Was pokin around a little, pretty sure the WH7's were used on a 175. Looks like there's a build date behind the throttle arm, but can't read it all. Carb kits are all the same, just gasket kits and needles and seats sold separate. Biggest problem will be if it has the "round" float bowls, the floats are impossible to find, and it will probably need at least a couple.

Thank you TransomStand.

What can be done to make more power? Besides get a different mota?

I thought head bolts in the liner were gone by then?

I think you already have a "different" motor:D

Not sure how fast it should be in your application, but significant power increases will be expensive.

83 was the new design block for Merc's but I've seen some odd Mariners from the transition year that were kind of a mish mash of parts.

Carb gasket sets are 1395-6452, needles and seats are 1395-7824, be a good place to start.
