merc guys who know s3000

How do I find what gen merc s3000 I have? Is there any numbers or spray paint colour that I can find out what I have as im running a twin rig with them. I have seen there on here ages ago there is two different exhaust chest types. both motors are running the -17 heads 56 psi reg etc thanks for any help.

The build date and serial # should be stamped on the upper port side of the block.

Other than what Rich mentioned the only other thing is the presence of alternator bosses. Only a couple years didn't have them. 96-97. Exh port configuration changed in 01

what would I be looking for in the exhaust ?

2001 and up were called eyebrow motors because of the eyebrow shaped top of the exhaust port. It has a noticeable high arch in the middle of the exh port
