As many of you know, our friend JWTjr has been a writer for several boating magazines. My favorite and IMO, THE BEST ever to cover performance O/B's was "Bass and Walleye Boats" mag.
W/the market crash, yr's back, that magazine went down w/most of the others and unfortunately that mean no more of Johns great writing.
Fast forward to current day........
I belong to Boat U.S. so I get their monthly magazine. So, I'm scanning the current issue when I stumble on an article on the proper flushing of current era motors. I know, kinda lame for us but how many Boat US members you think know what a 2.5 Merc is??
Anyhow, I turn to pg 2 of the 4 page article (good for you John!) and there's a picture of an Evinrude 135 Strangler w/wing plates and string steering!
Me being the smart guy I am, I realize I know who owns that motor  I check page 1 to see that it was in fact written by our boy.
Good job John and great to see a story from you again. I have missed them and hope Boat US keeps you busy.

John is and always has been the best tech writers out there. One of my fav's was his 3.0 hop up on a budget with Tony Bruccato.

Thank you, guys. I appreciate the kind words and the fact that you noticed my engine and read the story. I am also writing for Boating, about a story per month.

in the late 90s.The one I always think of to this day is the prop test with two STVs at a lake in NY.I think it was scroon lake ,I know the spelling is wrong but close, anyway I think he and another fellow tested five props, three cleavers and two srxs one was a 27 and the other a dah 29.Two merc cleavers and a 32 mach cleaver which at the time was the cheapest of all the props...The mach proved to be as good as the merc and srxs proved that they were very good also....long time ago ....thanks john, learned a lot from you....ED

I always had fun doing those types of stories. Sounds corny, but it was and always has been even more fun hearing from readers who enjoyed them too.

The other day I was BSing with my local dealer and he too mentioned the flushing story in BoatUS, noting specifically that "I knew when I saw that short-shaft V4 with race steering it was you!"...;)

I remember one of his 4 stroke articles that he made the comment about how loud the motor was under load. Wrote something close to: " sounded like a '66 Rambler on a gravel road at freeway speed".
I'd been following John for yrs at that point but was still blown away that someone would dare question the second coming, in print.
I knew I was a fan then ;)
For years I subscribed to Hot Boat and the minute the mag arrived I looked for "Outboard Tech". Turned out to be about the only thing worth reading in that particular mag.

I was a faithful follower of Bass and Walleye. I looked forward to John's articles. I really hated the demise of that magazine. I have also bought some of John's used parts off of this site. They are reasonably priced and exactly as described, if not better than described.

Hey thanks for bring this to our attention Gary. I have read many articles that John has written. The STV prop test and Econorocket are probably the ones I remember the most. I still go back to his writings sometimes for reference and sometimes just for good, interesting writing. Good to see your still writing John!

Man, you guys are great. Thanks for all the kind words. I really appreciate it, for sure. I am getting back into the swing of writing again, coupled with doing service work (rebuilds and remanufactured outboards for locals) when I have time. I enjoy both hobbies very much. It may be full time sooner or later, as I'm growing tired of the corporate life after 20+ years of being in it. With a few more steady writing outlets to make it more stable, I could consider that change in life.
i agree with rock....every month straight to ob tech......miss readin it....

Back in the day, I had hard copies of both and would fax em to all of the faithful that asked. He did another one on the V-4 cross flow and was a great resource for history and what would cross breed and what would not. They are all preserved in my go fast O/B Bible.

About a year ago I was trying to make a decision on a restoration on a 1986 Hydrostream Vegas. I was looking for some advise and had always enjoyed John Tiger Jr. articles. I sent him a pm on Scream and Fly and the next morning I had a response from him that was helpful and he gave me his phone number and said to call him. I called him and he talked to me for at least an hour and was helpful to a person that he had never met. One of the points John made to me is that I have had the boat for 27 years I must be attached to it. He helped encourage me into going ahead with the project and I am glad I made that choice. In my book John Tiger Jr. is an asset to the high performance outboard world and I am glad I was able to talk to him and hope someday to meet him.
The restoration project is ongoing with the help of some other members, but the conversation I had with John helped me decide to contact them and commit to the project. Thank You John.

2 of myfavorites were the Spring time boating on Schroon Lake with Neander and all, and the steering conversion and rerig of Mack the Knifes' Skater. uh,oh, brain fart, steering conversion was Dave Zelker's Stoker! Ah yes, and that 2.5 Drag motor you built!!
