How are the Yamaha 225 HPDI's on gas compared to the 225 Etecs and Opti's? Are the HPDI's good motors? I know you can really wake them up with Hydrotec parts.

i think the HPDI is the worst on gas out of all you mentioned there.. but its still not bad compared to non direct injection EFI. I love my HPDI though i had a stock 250 and it was very smooth running and worked great then i bought a hydrotech version and its a monster in comparison worse on fuel too.. but i guess that can be expected.

All were close enough that it wouldn't matter when BWB magazine tested them.
Compared to a carb fishing motor, very good, way better than your PM. I heard the Yammy has a lot of filters to service, but that's just work...

The filters can be a source of maintenance and if you're buying a used motor you're going to want to start fresh with at least the three easy ones. That being said I just serviced an 862 hour 2003 Z250 with original filters (and water pump lol). IMO the Yamaha 10 micron filter in the boat is a must as well as ethanol free fuel....keep good clean fuel going in and you won't have filter issues.

Do they need premium or do they run on 87?

The HPDI uses more fuel than the Opti and the E-Tec at the bottom-end and mid range, because the HPDI does not have a stratified mode to run lean.

At WOT, there is no major difference.
