Ok so I've read alot about people removing the regulator on the 2.5 260 16A charging system.
I have a questions - how do you do it, what wires do you disconnect. What about charging? Does it still charge, does it run any risk of destroying something?
Mine is not charging and I am about to replace the rectifiers and was going to replace these to if they are the issue. I get like 11.8V when motor isnt running at battery and when motor starts its like 11.1V
Thanks again

What rpm are you checking the voltage at? 260's wont charge at idle need rpm to charge. Your batt charge is low to start with.

mine charges only over 3000-4000 rpm otherwise it does not charge. I plug the battery charger each time I come back from a ride.

Got ya.. does anyone ever kill batteries? What about unplugging regulator anyone done it?

Why? Rectifier converts the AC Voltage from the stator to DC Volts, Regulator keeps voltage from going over 14.5-15 volts, most electronic components like switch box's and ECU's don't do well when hit with more than 15 volts.

I have a bad rectifier shorted to the ground.. Do you think its worth it to buy the regulator at same time roughly 200.. i cant test regulator with the rectifier being bad and am unsure of taking 200 shot in dark
Thanks Glenn

Replace the rectifier and re check.

Remove the two wires from the small regulator box on the top rear of the motor and tape them up. This will let it charge unregulated. With fuel and trim pumps alone, the charging system isn't enough. I've been running mine like this for years.
I tried to hook it up and run it once...almost killed the battery in an hour and a half.
You can connect the output lug on the rectifier directly to the +12V system where the big red wire attaches to a terminal. This will eliminate the regulator altogether. The battery itself will regulate the system voltage-- The 16 amp system doesn't have the balls to overcharge it to begin with, especially on an EFI motor with fuel pump and ECU. The EFI system draws about the same amount of current that the charge system can provide.
My Bridgeport is wires this way, with no regulator. No problems.

I haven't run a regulator on my 280's with 260 electrics in years.

IMO.The slickest 16 amp system,is to wire in one of the 40 amp regulators. It will handle 20 amps, has built in rectifier, and actually regulates. But you guys are right, a 16 amp with rectifier only, running anything at all wont hurt the battery.
