Friend of mine is looking at a 2003 Vking YT.. a few questions is :
whats the build quality like on these newer ones ?
what kind of coring did they use?
what are the handling characteristics of the YT?
whats kind of speeds have been seen with these YT's?
any knowledge about these newer hydrostreams would be great !!
thanks in Advance

I don't personally know any history on that particular boat, but it looks like one I've seen on Craig's list. If its the same one, the first ad mentioned it was a bank repo and was listed somewhere around 13k I think. Then I thought I saw it again listed as hull only with no price. Like I say, don't know that boat or the seller, but my guts felt funny about it. Not even sure why I felt compelled to respond to your post, but there you go.

You might want to do a search on here-not sure how, virtually every other thread has the word Hydrostream in it. I recall reading some threads about complaints about build quality for certain years for the "new Hydrostream." I don't recall the guy's name, but the man behind the revival moved from one factory to another (and maybe had his own at some point) to build them. If I recall correctly, they are now being built by a very reputable company that makes a brand we all recognize, and sold through only one guy. In fact, that guy--I will try to find his name, has, I think, gone out of his way to try to make right some of the hulls way before his time.
I have no idea how pervasive this was--I know there are people on S&F who know way more, that is why I held off, but just need to get their attention.
PS If I wasn't so bad with names, life would be so much better. Guy who is selling them now (or last I read) is Bottoms Up Marine. I am sure he is a supporting vendor here, but I couldn't find the list. Also, the Hydrostream.com site is still up, though I think that version of the company is out of business. But it has a "History" section that goes through the various factories up to 2008 or so. Of course, doesnt tell you which ones had problem boats.

You may be referring to Jim Contzen. I believe he was involved in a start or restart somewhere around the time this hull was made. When I spoke to him around 05, I think he had just changed facilities, either to or from Maryville Tenn. The HIN may give a clue who popped that hull, and give you a trail to begin at. Good luck!

The couple YT I have messed with run mid 80s with 150hp. One had an OMC 150 60* the other has a 2.5 150. The hulls suck in the rough but run good at speed they almost drive like a tunnel up top.

I would be very careful about that one. That is a Contzen built hull. He was running on a shoestring and who knows what the build quality is like.

Did'nt Spaeth build most of those of that era?

I don't think he has the YT molds...just the V bottom.

I don't think he has the YT molds...just the V bottom. This is correct. Spaeth has the molds for the 17'9" v-hulls (V-king, Valero, Vista bowrider--Vista was a Canadian Edition only boat, was never built by Pipkorn) and also has the 20' V and XT molds--so he builds the Vegas V & XT and also the Voyager V & XT.

It's a Contzen boat for sure; that's his ID. Hard to say whether it was built in TN or elsewhere. From prior reading on here, Contzen was in TN from the late 90's to early 2000's so it's a possibility that this particular boat came out of is place in TN. I know Chubb at Stroker was involved with some of the early boats as well, especially the Venom design. At any rate, I would guess it to be a TN boat and be a some sort of core lay-up; those guys don't talk about their "lamination schedule". Looks like a nice rig though.

That's interesting. I would have bet a dollar that the YT was never built after the original factory closed. I thought that Cotzen didn't get any of the original molds. Maybe he took a mold from a boat?

Nice. I am pretty sure I almost bought the motor off of that boat. He had it up for $1500 and I missed it by 10 mins. I know I saw the hull on eBay and CL for a while. Hope y'all got a deal!

i own a red glitter vking yt 2003. its was built in maryville tn. i have a few pictures of the deck of my boat sitting on a rollaway in the factory in 2002 and that white and yellow boat is sitting on a trailer in the building in the backround. i also have a brochure for the 2003 vking yt that has an all yellow one on it. my boat is solid red glitter with the same interior as the white and yellow one shown here. grey with red piping and stiching though. my boat is like brand new in every way. trailer and all. ive owned a few 1987 yt's and the 2003 seems much better built. def not the same as older ones. i have no pics of the bottom when being built though and im very curious on how it was layed up. any info would be great. i have pics in my phone of my boat im just not smart enough to put them on here. sorry. 508-962-7760 (tel:508-962-7760)

He may have gotten the V-king cap mold too then. The V-King hull mold is still here (in MN) and had a hull in it till recently. Replacement hulls are available once again.
