Would a 1750 mercury be too heavy for a viper? Are they a decent motor and do they have any common problems?

Lots of Vipers out there with big V-6's on them.. A little hairy but it's been done often with way more than a 175.

Is a 1976 1750 a decent motor or do they have a lot of problems? I just burned down my 1150 and got achance at a 1750. What is acceptable for compression? And is there anything I should look for? Thanks

That's the old 122 cu inch model released as the first Mercury V-6 "Black" Max" . I was a Mercury dealer then and the first run had issues but over the model year was out it improved greatly. They made good power with decent reliability. That model had a very open exhaust chest. With a little port timing change and some compression, the engine would come alive. Made a good race engine for several classes. just heavy and a 20 inch engine is top heavy on a Viper. If you shorten it to 15 it'll make a huge handling difference.

No. A 1976 1750 and a 78 Viper is what I cut my teeth on years ago and it is a fantastic combination. Feel free to PM me on details on modifications and set up.
