So I may have one or both of my powerheads sold soon. Anybody got advice on how to remove the powerhead and build a crate to ship it? Proper way to drain the fuel and stuff out before shipping, etc. Hoses/lines to disconnect? Selling powerheads only, no controls/harness/etc.

I also put a support under that front S/Steel bracket and screw it to the pallet.http://i42.tinypic.com/2vmizj5.jpg

Tux look like you have done this before. Tony are you gonnna remove powerhead studs? If not you will need to build a box to set it on. Use the gasket for hole orientation.

Yes, sir!! Old gasket for template, 3/4 plywood but with that many 2x4 1/2 will be fine  Only use the short studs, front and not the far back one but the ones before them, more meat in that area of the block. Make sure to use flat, lock washers & nuts to bolt it to the plywood  Also notice the spacing on the 2X4's, studs will land between them ;):D
I have also made some like this for easy pickup and delivery.

If you need to ship the complete motor this is how I do it.
IMPO, taking your time to make sure it is properly crated is the best insurance $ can buy!!
The first 2 pictures show the most important piece that needs to be right and strong below!

Picture below gets one more 2x4 bracing before inclosed. Also check the LU support, and the brace on the prop shaft another 2 very important things! I also make a bracket out of 1/8 aluminum that bolts to the tiller arm and saddle so it will not be able to turn, another very important thing!

Power head box for transporting! I cut and route smooth 2 slots on the sides for 2 guys to be able to lift it comfortably. The large slots on the ends is so you can stick your hand to install the 4 nuts.

I make these out of 2X6 so you can store or carry a powerhead with all studs on it.
If nothing else hope this thread helps other members!http://i39.tinypic.com/dgnsi.jpg

Guessing I'm keeping the powerhead studs since I am repwoering on the same mid and lower. What about draining the fuel from the motor so it isn't leaking everywhere during shipping?

Remove & empty the fuel/water separator then put it back, drain the VST tank and remove the oil reservoir empty it and put it back is all you need to do.
With the studs, if you are keeping them then buy 4- 3/8 bolts length according to plywood you use. I would also use washers and lock washer.

Tom, I just tape up the intake. I guess the plastic bag will keep it dust free :D

Gotta say--this is one very well done and useful thread. Following this guide might avoid a few flame threads when motors are shipped.

Any idea on a rough estimate for shipping from 33023 to essex, ma? Both are commercial addresses, I know the pick-up pint will have a forklift, drop off I'm not sure. Estimate for two powerheads. Just trying to get a rough idea.

Post it on Uship you will get instant quotes. Takes 10 mins.

I like metal engine crates. If you can fight off the scrappers, 15 mins its crated.

Any idea on what a 2005 200hp EFI powerhead weighs, more or less? Just powerhead.

baja200merk

Total weight will probably be about 250-300 with the crate/pallet

Thx for the info. I sold my powerheads but the buyer has a UPS account so he is sending me two crates to drop the powerheads in and crate them up, then call UPS to get them.

Make sure the buyer accepts liability for UPS wrecking the powerheads.

These crates have almost 22,000 miles on them, EACH and they were NEVER TOUCHED by UPS! ;) All 5 engines made it 10,500 miles without a fork poking through them..... I send a drive shaft 1800 miles via USPS and THERE IS NOTHING IN THE F'N BOX WHEN IT SHOWS UP! Never mind the mileage  :leaving:

Well I ended up shipping those two 200 EFI powerheads using FedEx freight, and they both got there just fine. Buyer sent a pre-made crate, we bagged them up, and sent them off.

Now, I've almost got my 225 ProMax powerhead sold so I'm looking to get shipping quotes again. I'm going to find a pallet this weekend and try to measure it to see what the measurements will be for the shipping quote. I entered rough measurements on uship.com of 4ft long,3ft wide,4ft tall and a weight of 300lbs. Probably overshooting it a little bit, but since I don't have the crate built yet, I'd rather overshoot than undershoot. Both ends of shipping will be business with loading capabilities. Thanks to Tony's great pics on building a crate, it shouldn't be much work at all.

Be careful using the internet shippers. If there is a problem not always good recourse. Hopefully you never have the problem. Top shippers like Yellow, Consolidated ,etc. are more but usually pay on a legit insurance claim.

The complete engine shipping crate looked great. I don't know if you are doing it already but you want to lock the steering arm so the motor can't swivel. Had an engine shipped to me once with the strap set up like that on the lower unit and no steering arm lock. During shipping the engine turned against the steering stop and ruined an Alien Cowl as it rubbed against the crate traveling across the country. I always save the original plates mercury used to bolt the steering arm to the tilt bracket.

Really good thread. Had a powerhead shipped to me once bolted to a pallet with studs in the block. Those studs are no match for a forklift blade!!!

I built this one yesterday. Base is 3/4" plywood. Sides and top are 1/2". :)

Looks good! Hope you are screwing that base to a pallet so they can get a fork lift and a pallet jack under, extremely important. Forklift at the docks pallet jack in the trucks because this is how they move them around. If they can not get something under it they may put a fork thru the side.

I also recommend the use of a brace on the flywheel if not using lift ring access to keep it in place. Lift ring access will save someone on the lift gate charge if they have a cherry picker.
Also a few 2x2 pieces to help the corners hold together is also a good idea. Screwing to 1/2 or 3/4 plywood IMPO is not strong enough the way they move these things around. Easy enough to do by just removing the top if it is already closed up.
Proper and solid crating is the BEST insurance $ can buy!!!
