Hi, I don't post on here often. I need some advice. I am not an expert on outboards by any means. I came across this boat and I've been going back and forth whether I should buy it or not.
It's an 88 Apache 22 Scout. I always loved these! It has the wrong motor on it. It has a Yamaha that needs to be switched out for a 250 or 300 Merc.
By the time I'm done buying a used motor I will be in the boat for about $30k
When I was young, I thought this was the coolest boat in the world. Now, I probably won't use it very much but it will look cool behind the house. If I was to buy it, what would be the perfect engine to put on it? when I was a kid, there was one in my bay in Brooklyn that had 2 200hp mercs. They were the biggest outboards at the time. Would that be an option going with twins? http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh196/Lubejobs/Misc/22Apache_zpsa2b8bbf2.jpg (http://s256.photobucket.com/user/Lubejobs/media/Misc/22Apache_zpsa2b8bbf2.jpg.html)http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh196/Lubejobs/Misc/apachestern_zps55c7b837.jpg (http://s256.photobucket.com/user/Lubejobs/media/Misc/apachestern_zps55c7b837.jpg.html) http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh196/Lubejobs/Misc/apacheinterior_zps4512f961.jpg (http://s256.photobucket.com/user/Lubejobs/media/Misc/apacheinterior_zps4512f961.jpg.html) http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh196/Lubejobs/Misc/apachetag_zpsc38e6972.jpg (http://s256.photobucket.com/user/Lubejobs/media/Misc/apachetag_zpsc38e6972.jpg.html)

Classic Aronow design. Beautiful. Would be a stand up boat with a 300X on her!

Or you could fit a similar era 300GT Johnson V8. Beautiful boat with lovely lines. Good luck with your decision.

She looks to be in bristal condition!! A 300XS would update her nicley with econamy and speed. A SHO would also be a great choise of power for her. For 30K or less with an updated motor so long as she is as nice as she looks sounds like far value for such a nice Boat in that size range of 22ft and deep!! If you have always wanted one she looks to be as good as it gets. I would love to own a boat like her. The deep vee and free board look to be perfict for all round use and seats look new also!! You could always off set some with the sale of the Yamahamer. Good luck with your desition.

Buy it.
Way cool, classic lines. I've been watching it for a while too.
Don't get too wigged out about the repower until you put some time on it. The good thing is, the yammi's hava cult following down here so would be an easy sell.
I agree with Whipper too. If you could wing it, a 300X on that thing would be killer. Make a great Keys/Intracoastal, exploration toy.

Looks like a clean boat with a recent resto. Make sure it was done right and everything is solid. Transom, stringers, floor, etc. Being an Apache, I would assume its a solid glass hull with no core, so that wouldn't be an issue.

300X sure would look and sound good, but the new 300XS is hard to beat with almost equal power and much better fuel economy.

Go for it I recently bought a donzi and a friend just purchased a 28 magnum outboard. The classics are the schnoozles as for the engine if it is tight and runs good use it take your time and find the power you want. .02:D

Gino Buy it and hang a new 300XS on it...Thats the best set up on that boat....Especially if your not gonna use it much you will want a nice easy reliable motor...If you were up here i would take the yamaha from ya...I bet you will wind up using it more than you think though...Its soo much easier than the big boats...

Classic Aronow design. Beautiful. Would be a stand up boat with a 300X on her!
Umm, this boat had nothing to do with Aronow. It was built by Bob Saccenti on 188th Street in North Miami Beach, now called Aventura. No coring in the hull, solid glass, four stringers. Deck is cored with 1/2" A-C fir plywood. General purpose(GP) resin. They were on the heavy side, and ran o.k. Believe it or not(and I'm an o/b guy), the sterndrive version ran better & was more fun. The only thing bad about buying this boat Gino, is that when your done with it & go to sell it, it will not be worth half the value. Just my .02.

The tourque of a SHO would be my engine pick or a Verado. Heck a 350 Yamahamer would be great also.

A friend of mine had a 22' Apache with a 300X on it. The boat ran well and handled rough water well considering it's size.

There would be no question, I would put a 300XS on it.

You guys are on crack with the motor thing... $3500 worth of hydrotec goodies and that motor has over 300 SUPER FN RELIABLE hp's and a ton of torque... That point is not debateable.

If I had your lifestyle Gino.. I would buy that boat and make it baaad to the bone. It won't ever run like your big cat.. But will be alot of fun in two to threes when your MTI is not getting any workout.

Just my 3 cents.
