Remember that the CLE has the larger forward gear bearing and some even have the larger prop shaft. A small bearing, standard shaft 1.87 gear set is miles from fitting. The reverse thrust spacer is different too.

You can interchange the bearing as it's common and ranges in several diameters That will fit both the gear and in the case with the correct race, provided the housing is machined for that diameter race.. The Alpha gear sets will all interchange with the reverse gear opening enlarged to go over the CLE or Sportmaster prop shaft. The gears set out of a 3.0 will also interchange but has to be shimmed properly.I believe they come in a 1.75/1 and a 1.64/1 ratio. The older gears in a 2.00/1 and a 1.87/1 ratio. As for the lower high Alt ratio I believe that was a special order item and may no longer be available.

In the small Mercury(2.0,2.4 and 2.5 -4 3/4 diameter case there are only 3 style gear sets to my knowledge! Preload (pin in the drive shaft) Alpha which was the predessor to preload they have big bearing forward gear bearing and are ratcheting these gears are the same physical diminsion as Sporty, Cle, Torqumaster AND ALL FISHING MOTOR with the ratcheting gearset they are 2.1, 1.87 and hi alt it may be NLA) Merc also sells 1.75 and 1.62 gears that are the same size physically but they came later. next is the nonratchet gear set it use's a small forward gear bearing but some of the parts interchange like shafts, carrier, and others but gear set does not!!! i heard a few people say that the gears sets will change out with bearings but i have never got a part number that will be the right bearing in diameter and thickness that will put the forward gear in the right spot for line up with drive shaft /pinion location nor the 3.0 gearsets as the pinion is larger in dia moving the pinion location to a spot where the gear colum actually locks up when carrier is tighted up im sure someone may do some trick stuff but i have not and i live by this theory IF I DONT KNOW THE ANSWER I DONT MAKE ONE UP:cheers:

Danny the fishing motor reverse gears must ground out to 1.45 or 20 thousandths to accomodate 1.25 shafts in the hipo stuff they are softer but they will work there are some shaft issues but this aint about Shafts its gears CLE case is Good
