Bought new in August 1988 and it spends most of the time covered in the garage. Only 74,000 miles which include the 2200 mile trip to Orlando Florida to pick up my 98 Euroski. I added the tires and lowered suspension 2 inches a few yaers ago but other than that it all stock... something has got to change soon:D Been thinking of adding a supercharger kit to add some excitement getting to the river!

Most of you have seen mine already. Just talked to a HP supplier about a new reprogramer that just came out for the truck. Costs $900.00 and adds 90 HP by itself. He also suggested a K&N filter and 4" exaust. That would take me from 510 foot pounds of tork right now. To over 900 foot pounds of tork, all for about $1600.00 He said this new chip that just came out has neck snapping tork. It would chirp the tires all the way to 2nd gear.

I ordered the truck in an LT. It has every option exept 4 wheel steering. That was another $4000.00 and I already had a window sticker of almost $43,000.00 I kinda wish I had it now

I just installed the module and K&N filter yesterday. HOLY CRAP!!!! What a ROCKET:) I can do a break stand now and burn the tires all the way through first gear. Dead stop just mashing it to the floor will get the tires chirping all the way through first gear. It hits second and pulls like crazy. I orderd the 4" exaust today and then its off to the drag strip:D :D :D

on comfort and speed. Nothing covers all the bases. GM has always made the best trucks. Have owned all makes and GM ( Chev) has always been the most reliable and easiest to service. Didn't know you could chip them, but why not? Thought about doing it in my car, but was pretty pricey for the 50 hp they promised. Nice truck.

BB, hey I have a customer that has a crew-cab 6.6 4x4 and run 12.4 in the quarter mile. that is awesome!! When he takes off hard he has to put it in to 4wd so that he will not spin the tires as much. Also don't worry about the 4-wheel steering, as of right now they only put them on the 1500 truck and the 2500 surburban.

and as soon as it gets nice out. I will wash it again and shoot a video of the hole shot. Man, to run 12's is real nuts. I gained over 100 HP but I would have to say mine would be in the low 15's

I think I just ended up with a wornout truck. It is set up for 5th wheel. The previous owner probably did alot of heavy hauling with the truck.

I like your Chevelle, I use to have a 396 powered 70 ElCam and later a 402 powered 72 Chevelle.

Being a diesel, it does not work like gas engines. The amount of torque is what makes it pull. On gas engines, the horsepower is almost always a good bit higher that torque. On a diesel engine, it is the other way around.

Kenwood stereo and amps (total 400w) JL Audio speakers
TST torque plate (in the injecter pump)
Free flowing exhaust

Skyjacker dual steering stablizers

240,000 miles. Had to have it towed once.

I have replaced: trac bar, steering gear, ball joints, 2 rotor hub assemblies, calipers, flexable brake lines, several sets of pads, drums, wheel cylinders, brake shoes, u joints, swing bearing, tranny rebuild, resealed tranfer case, water pump, fan bearing, belts, alt rebuild, starter rebuild, primary fuel pump, set of injecters.

I know there are some other things I forgot. It still gets 21 to 22 miles per gallon on the highway running over 75mph with the A/C on.

I really work this truck hard. It weighs just over 7,000# and I have had 6,000# in its bed.

Same wheel base, biggest thing is the ford is push button 4 wheel drive, the mercury is full time computer controlled all wheel drive. Really makes a big differance when towing or in bad weather. I have friends with fords and in the bad weather they won't go like my mercury does.

I could see myself driving that no problem. I always liked yukons, but I use the pickup to much so i figured I would find a nice topper for trips. I go camping on the swannee river alot so all of the pillows, blankets, etc. end up in the back of the truck. As my luck would have it, it almost always rains hard on the way up, not to mention spare parts that I take and have no way to lock up. I just have to find a topper that looks good and I'll be set.

I had a new model '02 Ford Explorer with the 4.0 and that auto 4x4. It worked pretty nice. Must have an electric clutch in there for the front axle. When it senses a tiny amount of slip it locks in. When I was driving on ice I would push the 4x4 button to keep it locked, as it would go on and off all the time. You could barely tell though. It was great for spotty ice. If you were driving too fast on ice like me, you could feel the back end slide sideways a hair before it locked when you hit a real slick spot on the gas. However, you couldn't turn it off to spin around for fun. No surprise the wife loved it.:)

The 4.0 was ok for driving, but I would not call it a powerhouse. It got up to 50 fast with the 5 speed auto, but had mediocre passing power above that.

Laserll
02-17-2003, 04:03 PM
The 5.0 in my mercury seems about right. It will get up pretty good. I am waiting for it to get tired then we can go to the same set-up my buddies run in their mustangs. Bigger heads, cam, injectors, H-pipe, flow masters. But that is for down the road. For now it does a great job pulling the laser where ever I need to go.

sho305
02-17-2003, 11:11 PM
I bet it runs nice! I had a 5.0 Mustang, and it was quite a motor. Had power all over, ran so nice. Car was not so nice, the '89 model. Rode like a tank and was not drivable in the winter, hardly in the rain even. Would drive on the e-way in the rain at 50mph in 5th, and it would get sideways if I stepped on it over 1/4 throttle....with new tires! Was fun though:D

Yea,

I'm an equal opportunity harrasser... Still, 12.4 in the quarter is about 110 miles an hour... That's pretty tough to do in vehicle that weighs over 6000 lbs... Even if you had the power, I'd think it would be really hard on the driveline.. anyway....

Hey Bob... I'll be waiting for a ride..

Was pretty wild yesterday afternoon. I pulled on to 169 in a 65MPH zone with two vehicals comming at me less than a block away. I had to go through a puddle of water first then punched it. I new I was spinning and accelerating hard and the Allison trany just keeps grabbing gears. It wheel hopped a bit when it hit 3rd gear and I shut down cause I was already at 80MPH. I had two black marks following me down the highway. You should have seen the look on the guys face after I let him catch me. I bet he thaught I was going to be one of them jurks that pull out in front of you and make you slow down:D

I dont think I will be running 110 in the quarter though. It still cuts out at 95:(

I meant to get in on this thread earlier right after Action17 posted his Dodge. Got sidetracked and forgot all about this thread. Good thing I waited. I wanted to back up the Go Fast Diesel thing. I was at the Hayes Mopar Show at Atlanta Dragway last August and there for the first time ever I saw the diesel truck class run. Lot's of black diesel smoke and lots of white tire smoke. There was a full race modified Cummins powered Dodge there. It was on slicks and front runners, had the exhaust through a single pipe out the top of the hood. After a big ol Top Fuel style burnout, the Mayor of Truckville turns in an 11.69 at 112 Mph. Faster than some of the gasoline powered "performance" cars in attendance that day. Sonofa.... it was cool!!

Okay now back to the original purpose of this thread.

I've replaced: All 4 tires.

I drive it like I stole it, treat it like a getaway car. Wash it when I can, but not when it's going to rain within the next couple of days. I feed it the cheapest gas I can find. I do change the oil regularly, somewhere around 5 to 7 thousand miles. It's still in great shape even though it has a couple of battle scars. It's a truck for cryin out loud, you haul stuff with it. I've brought home two car projects (a 70 Challenger and a 71 Charger) on car trailers when I still had the ball in the bumper. Brought home the 383 and 727 for the Challenger in the bed the day I towed the Chally home. i've hauled home appliances for family members and my own home. I've used it as it was intended. It's quite possibly the last vehicle I'll own unless I can talk the wife into letting me buy one 5 yrs before I retire so I can call it quits and have a nice new(er) truck.

Hi Gerben. The patrol has been a brilliant truck for towing. Very reliable and 28mpg. This is the third one I've had. The technology is very basic which makes them simple to repair. Tough as old boot.

That is great. Everyone (a few really) complains about 13mpg suvs here, but you can't buy a diesel. Seems that we don't want to improve the fuel quality enough to run them here or something. I like oil burners for some things, and the new ones run so nice. Everyone says gas is cheap here, but you can't go a year without putting 15k+ on your car either. Still costs money. I know your lucky to get over 18 with that sized suv here on gas. Mind you, a gas motor that does not tow like a diesel;)

grinch
04-29-2003, 12:30 PM
Most of the 4x4 market over here is powered by diesel because of the high cost of petrol. Nearly 4 GBP a gallon. Most have 2.8 turbo diesels although some, like Nissan use straight six, normally aspirated lumps. The Range Rovers use 4.6 injected petrol engines but at 14mpg I'll stick with the diesel thankyou. Diesel is also the same price as petrol except for marine use where it does not attract tax so costs as little as 20p a litre. They dye the marine/agricultural diesel red and if you get caught on the road with it in your tank, the Revenue confiscate your vehicle. (Bas**rds)

Grinch

sho305

Have not been impressed with a diesel without a turbo. They need that for sure. Here diesel is a little more than regular, close to midgrade. Down to $1.56/g now, but changing daily. Only VW and full size trucks are available with diesel here now, and maybe a BMW or MB. I have a 3/4 ton 4x4 Ford turbodiesel truck. It will do about anything, but is a big thing to drive all the time. It was only at 14mpg last time I checked, but that was mostly city driving. The gas ones get 11-13 all the time. The newer powerstroke ford gets 20 if you drive nice. That is the 7.3ltr international v8; don't know about the new 6 ltr. I have a car I drive most of the time.

I just would rather have a diesel in anything that does not have to go fast, like a sporty car. The gas cars, petro as you say, you can't drive a week without buying more. The diesels I have been around run forever and have little to maintain but for a fuel filter. Perfect for a multi-use SUV in my opinion. But, the soccer moms would not like that smelly fuel... ;)

We have the red diesel fuel that is higher sulfer for offroad and farm. You get in trouble for using it, but who is going to check? It is mostly to keep companies from using it, but is hard to get into your vehicle anyway as the pump is separate. I don't want to smell it or hassle for the 10 cents or so it saves you.

Ken, yes running up the river is my favorite place becauce it's more private and smooth than fighting the v-hulls on spring lake.
The only problem is that it take one tank to get fram my dock to the pits, and the other to get home, with none to spare. See page 29 of reader rides for a shot on the river.

Took this picture today of the tow car I bought . I did not like big heavy cars but I have learned to enjoy it :-)
Its a 2,8l about 160hp engine and is just enough to pull the Motion 25.
Its Norways burthday to day , and my wife and daughter uses National (or what you can call it :-) clothes from my grandmother part of Norway made in the 40s!

Most of my friends think I need to get a new one but this one is paid for :D I have to admit that the color aint much pink it started out bright red. If the good lord thinks my truck needs a wash job He makes it rain:D The only work thats been done is about 10 sets of frt and rear brakes no rotors yet did have to replace rear drums once:mad: about 15 sets of mudders and bunches of oil changes. I bought this truck in 1998 used with 115,000 miles on it for 14 grand. It's towed most of it's life and has treated me good. She rolled over to 200,000 miles this morning and has never had anything major go wrong at all. I figured she deserved some special treatment today. So I got her a fresh oil change and grease job, then came home and gave her a hand wash and a hand wax job. She looks more like a 2004 than a 1994 again. The pictures don't do it justice.

Close, you're off by ~45 miles.
Photo was taken at the Rock House launch ramp, below Havasu on the CA side of the Parker strip. Crossroads, CA to be exact, if you're familiar with the area.

Funny you should mention Windsor, my boat is currently in the shop at Lakeland Marine, just a few blocks east of Windsor Beach. The lower unit on my 2.5 lost a waterpump seal, oil go out, water go in, gears go crunch. You all know the story.

Sorry for getting off topic. Old Cadilacs are great tow vehicles. LOL

My 1998 12valve cummins 4x4, quad cab, 2500, 5-speed (nv4500). Fully loaded, 3.55 gears, 3" rancho, 305-70-16 Nitto's, 16x8 boyd coddingtons, alpine stereo.
motor stuff: #100 fuel plate, exhaust, Scotty II/UNI intake, governor springs, etc etc. 387 rear wheel hp, 913 lb/ft at the rear wheels. runs 15.2 @93mph with the slipping clutch, and weighs 7300lbs with fuel. Its getting a new clutch this weekend, and a new turbo this month (will be at 500+rwhp soon).

I average 21mpg empty, 18-19 towing the boat with the camper, and about 16mpg towing around 20,000 lbs.
It has 160,000 miles, and the only thing replaced is the overflow valve on the pump, and one serpentine belt.

BTW, 6-7000lb diesels can and do run 10's in the 1/4 mile. Some of the 5.9 cummins are making WELL in excess of 1,000 rwhp. I have a lot of videos if anyones interested.....

My tow is a 92 Chevy suburban. I ordered it in the spring of 92 took delivery early july. Silver, 350 engine, tow package (oil & trans cooler) 3.42 gear. Rebuilt the trans @ 180,000 miles, and again @ 340,000 and yet again @550,000 miles. Two water pumps, three radiators, one a/c compressor, twice had to replace a sensor on the TBI,replaced the distributor at 510,000. It was flat wore out, wouldn't stay timed. Drivers door window motor some time ago, lots of brake pads and shoes.Busted a heater hose the other night on a back road and really over heated it. Ordered a crate motor from Pace. I'll sit the original engine on a stand and let it rest. The valve covers have never been off the engine--maybe the best production engine ever built. Got an 01 3/4 ton 01 Suburban 6 litre--just broke in (88,000 miles) but it's momma car.

If ya get a V6 just be sure you stay away from the dreadded 3.0 litre, otherwise known as the 3VZ. theyre gutless and have problems such as burning exhaust valvs and repeated head gasket failures. Even the ones built later on are troublesome. get the 3.4, theyre pretty much problem free and got lots more oomph. If you can get a 1997 or newer you can easily drop on a TRD supercharger too.

My baby is a 2003 Chevy Silverado 2 wheel drive short bed arrival blue in color with 5.3 ltr. Vortec 3.73 locking rear differential. I had a 2003 full size dodge with the hemi in it that I bought brand new (paid cash for it) and put 9,000 miles on it and traded in on this truck because its gas milege was horrible. I've kept it pretty simple on modifications, I added a billet grill, bug shield, head light covers, bed rails. Performance mods are a 3 inch flowmaster cat back system with stainless tips, throttle body spacer and superchips programmer. And it has as much if not more power than the dodge with the hemi that I had. It now has 35,000 miles on it and it gets in the mid 20s mpg if I keep my foot out of it, which is hard to do I love the sound of those flowmasters! I haven't figured out how to add pictures off of my blackberry yet or I would add one. I love this truck, I wish I had never bought the dodge 1st.

Gotta have the best of both worlds. A big truck and a little truck.

This is before the haircut of course. :D
This used to serve as the tow rig but a few changes has made it a fun truck only for now. Going to rethink the hitch idea after it goes in for a fresh coat of paint. Again. :)

Here is another little project I am slowly working on and what currently is hauling my toys. Need to air up the bags in the back a bit though when I hook up the trailer or put toys in the bed to smooth out the ride. :)
