I know that mercury is natorious for under stating the hp of there motors,so my question is what hp does a stock '97 PM 225 put out. Looking to one on my '90 RR jaguar bare bones drag boat, with 1.87 torqmaster and a 24 A5 chopper estimate mph,all opinions accepted
thanx

There was a dyno sheet posted on here, I want to say it was 259 at the crank at 66-6800.. so 240 ish at the prop.

I have one now, going to ruck for 2 sleeves and some welding, going to put a horn, spacer and a 16 amp system on it and see what it'll turn out with a 7200 rev limiter and stock heads.
If his motor still has the limiter, it'll be stuck in the low 80's. It should run 100+ with a 30.

I know that mercury is notorious for under stating the hp of there motors, so my question is what hp does a stock '97 ProMax 225 put out? All opinions accepted
We dyno'd one of my Promax 225's which was a 1999. I have attached the printout and the motor made 248HP at 6300 to 6400 RPM's. Now I can't comment on what (if any) differences there were between a '97 model year Promax 225 and a '99 model year that might effect just horsepower numbers but I think they were very, very minor.

No difference except for the ECU's. Rev limits on both if the box is stock it's 6750. Some of the early 95,96,97 A6 boxes were good boxes.
Mirage, sorry can not help with your setup, not familiar with your boat.

jb this does have a thing to do with your motor but u may wanna ditch the chopper prop for your mirage. Depending on what u wanna do theres lotsof better choices for that boat. A chopper is a bow lifting prop. U dont need that on a mirage. A stern lifting prop will do ya better

I have a ski racer with a 225 promax, it doesnt like a cleaver, a chopper is ok but an ET works best.

Never had a chance to try a Yami drag, I need alot more setback, still working on set up.

8-9.5 setback. Rapid jacks work well on these boats. Jack the motor up untill u loose water pressure and drop it 1/4 inch and run it

I'm gonna buy a 12 in versa jack from Bobs

a 24 is too small it will accelerate quick to the limiter.
A 32+ will get you the highest top speed. Should run 105+, my buddys ski racer with a 2.5 175 EFI ran 103 with my 34.
If you have the stock ECU, this is what you should see with 5% prop slip

I ran a 225 Promax on my STV, almost the same as your boat. Ran a 30 pitch 4 blade Bblades Blaster to 100 mph. You will get uneeded bow lift with that chopper.

12 Inches is way too much. 4 to 6 is fine.

Like with any motor be careful not to lug it with too tall of wheel. I suggest you do your testing in increments. I would also not suggest bumping the limits in your box if all internals are stock.

Thanks for all the input, very iformative. Ive often wondered about my set back being to much (10") as for the prop itst the one I have would love to have a 24 yamaha drag when the funds alow it. I dont have this motor now thinking about buying it and using it in sanctioned racing. looking to run in the low upper 80's to low 90's. I have a ported carbed 200 that needs some work now, it ran in the low 90's, just pondering on which way to invest, stay with the 200 or buy the PM225

10-12 is what you want. Brent ran his ski racer over 125 with a 300x every time out with 10-12in back. He also ran his STV 130+ with 10in back 300x. I ran my ski racer with 14, it was HEAVY and cruised best with the setback.

Unless u wanna covert the promax to carbs or have the ecu rev changed or can to drag electrics. I think the 200 will be faster top end cause of it having the 6800 limit

I asked Bobby, he told me his ran best with 12in and even better with 2in spacers, the furthur back the faster it went.

Thanks bigblue, thats the info I was looking for, now can someone recommend a good machine shop in central oklahoma, I need my 200 block decked, cant get a head to seal, tried different heads and a number of head gaskets, still leaks water into bottom left cylinder, it did seal at one time so I dont think it is cracked.
I want to run 112 octane what cc heads am I looking for, and is there any advantage to running 260 heads?

If you run 112 u might as well run 19cc. But remeber all that compression is beating up your motor. And the block box it up and send it to ruck or outback outboards. Shipping is cheap to get it to someone who knows mercury blocks.

Wont run these heads all the time, just for racing. There is nothing like compression(and a little timing) for a great hole shot, got to beat them big block V-8's off the line!
Can someone supply me with the Phone numbers for these establishments?

1 (706) 564-6372 outback outboards.
1 (920) 233-3833 Ruck Either are great choices
