Hope this is the right place for this thread
Just picked up a nice viper. Ill be putting on a 150 mercury. I found a good deal on a cmc hydraulic 5.5" jackplate. My question is- is there a certain jackplate that work best on a viper?

Is it a 15" or 20" 150? If a 15", you don't need a jack plate. If a 20", try to find a 15" exhaust housing, swivel bracket, drive shaft etc. and convert it before going to a jack plate.

:iagree:
100%
An inline needs to be kept close to the transom, all that weight and setback will make the boat a pig.

It's a 150 v6. 20" shaft. It's hard to find a 15" mid around here cause no one around here messes with high performance boats.

OOPS, I think we both assumed it was an inline:o
I'd rather see you with a fixed jack plate to save weight. Some guys run as much a 5" setback on that boat, I prefer less myself.

I have a 5 inch on mine,but i'm running a v4

So a manual would be better just cause of weight? The boat has new transom. I was just wanting a hydraulic because of the easier adjustment and also I can get one for 200

your just jokin right? If not ya might want to get out a little more often.
Louisiana probably has the most hi-performance,21' and under, single engine, outboard boats per capita in the U.S.
They seem to have a fondness for Merc V6's so lots of HP Merc parts are in the area.
DSRA is based out of the area and most of their races are in south LA . Check out their website

A manual is lighter and stiffer, and will handle better.
You're not out of the ballpark with the hydraulic, if you're getting a deal on it, try it, you can always sell it for what you have in it. A lot of my advice is based on personal preference, and how I like the boat to drive.

I'm not looking. Lol. What I meant the area of Louisiana I am in doesn't have many of them. And people with the mids aren't selling them because they use them on their drag boats.

I'm sorry I lied. I had a mirage river racer with a 200 merc last year. Didn't keep it long though. I'm just gonna run a jack plate. I have a 6" manual already so ill probably just run that. Gotta govthrough the motor and do some maintenance to it. It's been sitting up for around 2 years.
hope I didnt come across as a smartass, its just that some of us southerners sometimes forget or dont realize how good we have it down here. Year round boating and some of the fastest boats in the country. You are right in the heart of it.
And yes I know how regional HP boating can be. Texas is divided distinctly. Coastal is offshore boats, east is OB's,west is jets & vdrives (with a few exceptions of course)
with or without a boat, you need to come to the Winternationals. Jan 19, Banana Bend on the San Jacinto river, east of Houston. LA is usually well represented there...

No offense taken. But where I live people have hunting and fishing boats. I have a few of them myself. But I work so much I miss the DSRA races every year. One of their races is only 10 minutes from my house. I have a good friend that lives in orange, tx. I'm sure he goes to all the hot boat gatherings out in Texas
Yep. Here in Galveston county all you see is Jon boats& center console bay oats. Clear lake area has enough offshore gofast boats to choke a horse but you don't see much smaller stuff

Trey, I'm running a 20" V-6 200 Merc on my Viper with a hydrolic CMC jack.
I never adjust it so a manual would work. I have the first series hull called a Viper I with less freeboard. I consider mine a 2 seater. I'm running a 28" ET prop at 6500 rpm's. (Your 150 will have a different gear ratio)
Make sure you have ALL the safety gear in place. The Viper with a V-6 will bite you in the butt if you don't respect it.

I took the old motor off today. Getting the 150 tomorrow. Hopefully get it mounted up on the viper and start going through motor.

Got the 150 mounted up. Just have to order another dual steering cable bracket for motor.
Can someone tell me a good starting point for the height of motor?
What cowling a will fit this motor besides the clamshell style
Also I thought it had the old style trim, but it doesn't. It has the 2 solenoids on the side of the carbs.

Steering is working. Can someone post up a wiring diagram for the trim solenoids? I new to get working on that.

You can run any of the HP cowls but the powerhead will have to come off to mount the plate that everything sits on.
Which trim do you have? two or three wires from motor. The two wire has reversing solonoids, three doesn't.
