does anyone know what this extension of the hull beyond the transom is for?? Built in trim tabs or what?

I like it when you can see the pride in someones work. I need to hit the rules book and check more into those boats. Look like fun.

What about some of the engine?

Speedy,
Looks good. You've got me itching to build another boat.
What kind of plywood? What's the stain.

Too late now, but I would have told you to:
(i) encapsulate everything on the bench before assembly - use an IR heat lamp,
(ii) round over all the frames and stringers - the sharp corners are hard on the toes,
(iii) wipe up all the drips before they set - I spent weeks grinding away diamond hard filled epoxy because I was too tired to climb underneath and clean up the squeeze-out when I bonded the hull.

Here's a photo of my boat.

Thats marine mahogany plywood on the sides and the deck will be the same, the stain is from Lee Valley but it was much darker when the sides where done about 3 years ago, since then it was stored outdoors under a blue tarp, I guess it wasnt dark enough and the sun penetrated and I ended up with that colour. Still not sure what im going to do about that. The transom has an extra piece of honduras mahogany laminated to the original transom to improve the looks a bit. I plan on putting down some sort of floor, not really sure of what yet, do you have any interior pics of your ride? that way it wont really matter about my not having rounded the edges of the frames.
Thanks for your comments and advice any more from anyone would be greatly appreciated.
p.s what do you suppose the extension of the hull beyond the transom is for? would I be correct by thinking they are some sort of built in trim tabs or just meant to make the running surface a little longer?? Thanks

Looking good man!

Tis gonna be one sweet ride when its done - and that better be next summer brova!

I don't think they are trim tabs, because trim tabs have to be adjustable to have any impact in stabilizing the hull...right?? I would guess it like you said it- just a lil more running length on the hull so when you get her nice and aired out you still got somethin wooden in the drink.

Lets hop up that 40 of yours! I got a few litres of jet fuel in the boathouse:D

i think thats what the extension is for sure. I have to extend my thanks to Youngstream for helping me move the boat from my garage into my heated workroom.
jet fuel?? you dont think itll burn my engine up? lets go for it!

my understanding of this and from what I have been told in the past, is it's to stop water creeping up the transom and pulling you back, this is why you sharpen the hull at this point when you blueprint the bottom.
My cousin had a GRP Mirelli GT which had a stainless steel strip long the trailing edge of the extension.

Aight, got a mear day's work in on the boat last weekend, fit and cut remaining deck frames. In the process of encapsulating and then they get resin glued and screwed in.
I wasnt exactly sure of positioning of the single centre bucket, but had to make a decision because I had to place the dash so.. I chose to have the dash just slightly forward of centre which places my weight in the seat around centre maybe an inch or two beyond towards the transom. I plan on making some sort of a floor, probably cedar strips with small spacing between ( light and lets the hull breathe).
Right behind the bucket seat i plan on mounting one of those quicksilver plastic gas cans down to the centre of the boat with something like battery straps etc. after the gas can closer to the transom in the centre the battery???? what do you think. what is the danger of putting the battery near the gas tank??? How far away should I place these from one another???
K, so youve seen the boat, heard my rigging plans, now I need help with steering. I was considering pulley but can go hydraulic. What are the weight and price differences in the two and what other systems are offered on the market other than the Teleflex stuff? Oh yeah, the motor I am running for the time being will be a 91' Mariner 40 SS.
Last question... I want to make this thing somewhat trick if possible and was reading some stuff exchanged in another post by Airide and Naughty about drilling the exhaust. I take it with a motor this small it really wont do much performance wise but I was thinking about doing it just for the fun of the noise. There arent any perfomance reductions in doing this are there??? Any pics and explanations on how to do this would be awsome.
Thanks.

Beautiful wood! You've done a great job! Lookin' foreward to following the balance of the build up!
I used straps on my tank also. A trucker firend of mine gets them to tie down loads. The have a tag on them that says they are guaranteed to 1000 lbs ea. That should hold down 12 gal. of gas. My battery is also "next" to the tank.
I was going to attach a pic in this edit, but it looks as if I'll have to post the pic sep.

Sorry Speedy to be yackin' in yer thread..:(

your project deserves to be yacked about! I used to have a checkmate mx-15 that was rather similar to your baja hull and I followed your whole project, some serious work.
About the straps, thats the idea I was having but at a smaller scale. I will only be using one of those removable quicksilver plastic tanks, not a built in. But I will strap it right behind my single bucket in the middle. The battery issue is still worrying me however becasue a built in tank like yours is much less suseptable to leakage than one of the quicksilver ones I plan to use, I guess it will be ok if I am reasonble with the spacing and careful at fill up time.
Anybody else have any ideas on steering for this project, was on the teleflex wensite looking at the BAystar units they have. Anybody know anything about them, also looking at the SafeT-2 and the NFB Rack or ProRack, what do you guys think would be most applicable for my boat?
Still searching for exhasut drilling answers for my lil' 40!!!

Speedy,
I used 3/8 occume ply for the floor. Added a layer of 6 oz glass as non skid (didn't fill the weave). Try to keep the center of gravity low when you add the floor.

Cover the interior with a drop cloth to catch the drips before you bond the deck.
