I know that this was asked before, but when I do a search for the thread it doesn't find anything, it must have got wiped out.

I am having a problem with my merc 2.4 efi not idling properly. if someone finds the link to the thread or have any suggestions on what to check, I would be much obliged

thanks

I'd quick check idle timing and linkage adjustments (may just need to kick up the idle speed), but then go right to the TPI.
Can you describe what's happening better?

thanks dave!
I will try to be more specific.

after starting, I let it warm up a bit, when I go to shift into forward I have to give the gas a little kick or it will stall, (idling too low I think). If I go for a ride when I slow down and let off the throttle, goes right back to a bad idle. I have to keep my foot on the gas a little bit, scary because it doesn't like to shift if I don't have it just right. It is more annoying than anything trying to keep it from not stalling.
I hope that explains my problem a bit better

thanks again

check the fitting on the vaccuum line running to the ecu the fiiting on the motors intake, dont blow air into the ecu just the fitting on the motor sometimes they get a lttle trash built up in them, take the line off and hit the fitting with some compressed air to clear it and see if that helps, if not go to the idle timing set screw and bump up the timing a bit while idleing in gear with the cowl off

sometimes it can be a lazy or sticking injector thats dripping also

always try to start it in gear to reduce wear on the lowers clutch dogs and it will eleviate that irritation also

just some thoughts fer ya :)

I will try what you said, I thought it was bad to start in gear?, I guess not. If you start in gear does that mean you never use neutral or are you talking just for staring?

bad to start in gear? oh hell no, fire it up in nuetral initially at the ramp warm her up then shut it down throw it in reverse get it off the trailer shift to nuetral shut her off throw her in forward and fire it up and go

i never shift it while it's running unless in a situation where the time it takes to shut it off and change gears will cause me to bump something

Starting in gear is the way to go. Sometimes you have to up the idle to keep it running - like with a light flywheel - and shifting at those rpm's will break something. I learned by breaking a drive shaft at the gear. You have short the wire in the control box for the safety, buts that no problem.

I never did like the noise it made when shifting,
