Hi, I am experiencing some chine walking especially to the starboard side (drivers side) on an SOB 22ft pad vee boat with mercury 250 xs. I changed battery, oil tank and trim pump to the port side and the balance became better, but still not even. I am used to boats chining on the port side due to the prop torque, however this seems to be the contrary. I'm running a 4 blade chopper at 1" above the pad.
What would happen if I grind down the torque tab on the sportmaster? Has anyone done this before? I know that the toque tab is there to combat torque steer coming from the spinning prop.. but it seems that the boat is not causing much torque steer and probably does not need the torque tab..
Any ideas?
Tnx

I can not answer the question about chine walk, but if you remove the torque tab and it did not fix the problem that lower is kinda limited to a twin application. I chose to cut mine off for a twin application after watching for RH non torque here for a long time. I really did not want to devalue the resale but went ahead and cut it.

Could use use epoxy to build a torque tab to the opposite side just to see if chine stopped? I know it sounds odd but the two would cancel each other out. If it didnt work, just grind the epoxy off.

I dont know if your still contemplating taking the toque tab off but I have a straight skeg sporty 1.75 I would trade you. It has no torque tab.
The tab needs to be there. Otherwise the gearcase will not track straight. It's not just simply for fighting steering torque. It actually counters the forces of a surfaced prop so the gearcase does not need to be driven at a crabbing angle to get the boat to drive straight.
This motor has solid mounts??

For knowing so much about other peoples lowerunits...why is it that your running one that has a cracked skeg.
Shut the f*** up about my skeg. There's a tiny surface fissure on one side of my tab weld that turns back toward the tab itself. My skeg is fine.

If your gonna be a know it it all at least start with yours first. You own a boat that is delaminting as I type this,or is yours is the the only Hydrostream in the country that isnt. Why dont you use some of your own advice and address your own boats issue before you worry about others.
