I have done the following mods to a 1988 200hp Johnson:
filled relief ports, smaller cc heads, cleaned up the mating ports with block and sleeves, opened up the venturi throats in carbs, rejetted carbs and removed airbox.
I now have the intakes off and going to install Boysen reeds.
Is there anything that I can do to the intake? Monty's racing sells his intakes, but at $695 are they really worth it?

Yes, there is a good bit you can do to those intakes. Radius the sharp turns and flatten that hump some just in front of the reed cages. Basically, straighten out the air flow some and match them to the reed cages. Then polish them with 60/80 grit paper.

Is there $600 worth of difference between them and after market? Unless you're planning on turning some serious rpm, I doubt you would ever notice the difference.

I got this out of a mag article by John Tiger Jr.

"The most restrictive intakes were installed on late '93's to '96 models, while early '86 to early release '93's had the best, free flowing manifolds. At least they did until the 1997 manifolds came along."

He also goes on to say that they will only help if you are running over 6300 rpm.
