01-08-2003, 04:05 PM
Pete, whats your teams record? Are ya winnin?
what team??? i play for my school, but that season is over now. Our record was 75-2 or something, and we travelled to all over canada with that. we were ontario champions. for my club team im not sure on our record, i think it is something like 20-2, were getting to the busyest part of the season right now with tournaments coming up in Penn State and maybe Cali. The club team is somewhere in the top 5 of ontario, not to sure yet, to early in the season to tell ya
Pete
airide18
01-08-2003, 04:27 PM
Sounds like fun,do you get to travel with the girls team? Now that wound be sweet!!!!:D
ha, yes that would be sweet but no we dont get to travel together. the girls and guys seasons dont really overlap in school. the only tournament we do get to be with the girls is nationals, but usually everyones to focused to have the kind of fun you are thinking of. Whenever i watch the girls play i allways need to remind myself that i have a girlfriend :D

Well if ya got a girlfreind than you are doin the right thing by reminding yourself about your girl.:) Now me i would be eyes wide open. The volley chicks at are school are HOT,went out with one last year, she was hot but had a attitude prob.
yea airide you got that right, most of the volleyball girls that i have met are very hot, but do have attitude problems. their a little to stuck up for my likeing. I have a ton of them that are my good friends now, but i dont think id go out with them. You gotta find a hot one with a good attitude, its hard but worth it when u find one
boataddict26

How come Hydrostream never put a windshield on the voodoo to make it look more like a mini vector? Can you get one?
Anyone looking for an 18 pitch chopper for a small merc motor? Not sure what else it would fit. Email me.

Hydrostream did put a windsheild on their voodoo, and their mini voodoo. I think it was an option back in the day when Canadian edition made the voodoos. if you can wait untill summer i will take some pictures of the full size voodoos and mini voodoos with windsheilds.

Actually they did produce the classic style curved windscreen for the voodoo...
Iit looked funny tho...cause they did not produce the aluminum rail that tied it into the coaming.
So it looked incomplete...just like the coamings do.
I agree that it sohuld have the classic look too.
Spaith is retooling the deck and removing the large coamings to make it look better...it will resemble a Valero deck next!!

Ilovespeed....Your puttin a yammy on your voo doo???Did you do research on that engine?
David
01-18-2003, 09:12 AM
There is probably a picture of the Voo Doo windshield on the IHR. I don't like the windshield looks but the price of no windshield is getting wet in rough water.
Yamaha or Merc 60 for a Voo Doo? I did a lot of engine research before I got mine and then ignored everything I learned:)
The Yamaha 3's are reputed to be great engines but hard to prop for speed on a Voo Doo. A Yamaha dealer told me that the big pitch 70 props have too much diameter for a Voo Doo. The Yamaha 60 & 70 have 2.3 gears, you will need a lot of pitch. The Yamaha 50 is geared at 1.85.
I think the Voo Doo engine of choice is the Merc 60; 1.64 gears, small diameter prop, and the most prop options.
Interestingly I found a guy with some 650XS who refused to sell them to non racers. He said I would regret buying one and come back to blame him.
who can work on a boat in this weather?

I will post a picture of a voodoo with a windshield .. a guy i know that has one up near apsley ontario has a white voodoo witha 40 merc ... his winsheild broke but i got some pictures from him before it broke ... i was jsut looking at the yamaha because i was interested in what i could possibly get ... i dont know everything about motors ... i dont know much ... and its good to get this information ... the 60 merc is looking as the best engine as of right now ... inclduing the price issues beacause yamahas are pretty expensive ... looking at the 90 yamaha specifications it says 13:26 (2) gear ratio ... the 75 yammy 12:28 (2.33) gears ... the 60 merc 1.62:1 gear ratio ... soo my quesion what does this mean ????? Message for Ilovespeed
90 on a Voo Doo seems wrong. I don't think HP is the key to Voo Doo speed. Set up and driveability matter at least as much. The fastest one I have seen was Mark Casper's. He had a detuned 650XS (long shaft conversion, lowered compression). The top of the bullet was even with the bottom of the pad. His boat was GPS'd by a prior owner at 70 mph.
More weight out back = harder to drive for these boats.
How sensitive is set up? Even driver position matters. My brother has a lot of V bottom history and I have none. Yet in our limited Voo Doo driving last summer I went a little faster just because I sat in the center of the bench and that made it easier to drive.
There are rpm/pitch/speed programs available. You can download one from the IHR. In brief, speed = propeller revs X pitch X slip. You get more speed from more pitch or more prop revs. Prop revs geared down from powerhead revs. 2.33 gears means the crank turns 2.33 times for every turn of the prop. 1.64 gears means the crank turns 1.64 times for every turn of the prop. Assume a slip factor of around 0.9.
You want low numerical gears for a Voo Doo. First, it is hard to find big pitch props for these little motors. Second, the little motors won't turn a big diameter prop to high rpm. Raising the engine helps the motors rev higher at the expense of planing.
Why is my 70 Nissan wrong or is it wrong? With my 1.92 gears and 18" chopper my little Nissan is going to have to go 7000 rpm to get me to 60 mph. Tabara racing is getting 7200 out of a stock Nissan 40 so maybe this is possible.
6000 rpm, 18" pitch = 51 mph for my Nissan, 59 mph for the 60 Merc.
I belong to the PBCC. Next summer a foot throttle, fix the water pressure gage, and maybe raise the engine. And get a lot more solo seat time and learn to drive.

David is exactly right, its not always the amount of HP,its the weight to HP ratio.Ya dont always go faster with a bigger engine.

thanks for the information ... finally starting to understand some of the stuff u guys talk about ... soo if u have lower gears the motor wont per say have to work as fast to get higher speeds ... the higher rpms will mean faster prop than higher gears at same rpms with same hp ... but if u had gears at say 2 like the 75 ... with the same weight or close to it would this make the 60 nearly as fast because of the gears .... ???
Thanks
Tyler p.s. im joining pbcc this year ... mayhbe see u at a event with my voodoo ...

An issue with the small motors on Voo Doos is prop availability. No one is making custom props for these motors and the factory availability is limited.
Yamaha's on line guide shows props of up to 14" diameter for the 90. I think the inline 6 Merc props will fit and I guess you could have a V6 14.5" diameter prop cut down to fit. But its a big prop for a small boat and smallish engine. Yamaha's biggest prop on their web site is 25" in aluminum, 23 in pro series stainless. 13.25 X 24 in SS 'performance'. My prop program shows you'd need around 6700 rpm with 24" to see 70 mph with 2:1 gears.
90 is more than enough power to push a Voo Doo past 70 but can a stock Yamaha 90 turn that high? Can it turn that high with a 'big' propeller? And if you rev it so far past the power peak why have that big a motor to start with?
When I was motor shopping I spoke to a Yamaha dealer who was looking for a prop for a Yamaha 75/Voo Doo combination. Not an easy thing to find. The 75 uses the same props as the 90. At the time I was looking at an 80's 85 Merc for a Voo Doo. I thought my XR4 props would work. He told me the boat would not work with props that large (13-14) in diameter
The little Merc 60 has 1.64 gears, and Merc used to list thru hub 18, 20, and 22" cleavers, all 12" diameter. Plus the 10 3/8 X 18" over hub chopper from the Merc 25 can be re-hubbed to fit. I am casually looking for a 20 or 22" cleaver for my Nissan. I have the 18" chopper now.
You should join the PBCC. There are lots of people with a lot of experience to talk to, the events are fun, and the people are good.
I bought the Nissan complete with Voo Doo because the price was right and it would be fast enough for a newbie to V bottoms. No regrets.
What about finding a used Voo Doo race boat complete w/motor? One of the guys on the board was selling his.

The yamaha is not the ideal engine for a small v botttom.First off it sounds like they are hard to get props for it ,second there is nobody that runs any type of modified 75-90 yammy so the are no mods and nobody to help you with mods on that engine. Then the weight of those engines is very high and the voo doo alone is a very heavy boat for its size. Then i dont think can even get a 15" mid for it.Then the gears and the case are a big prob.I think if you could get a complete SST 60 engine it would be the best engine for a voo doo.It only weights 180LBS and produces 100+HP.But they are hard to find.If you are lookin for a cleaver ive got one that is 12x23 3 blade cleaver for sale if interested ,its through hub.

I feel the same way, lighter and more power is the key to the best speed.I dont know if anyone has ever put a SST 60 on a voo doo but i think it would be awsome for a voo doo.Light and powerful.Voo doo would be a slug with a 90 yammy,no 15" mid capability.

I would steer clear of 3 clyinder merc.HEAVY!!!!.BA26 the 2 cly 60 is the same as a 50 just that the jetting is different and the exuast chest,so if ya wanted on of those you would just buy a 50,same thing. No bigg differences.75 johnson is a great mota,Is good for longigevity.

If your lookin to go fast i would stay clear of any new motas.About 90 and older is you best bet for engine years. The best omc 3 cly were in the mid 80's.The newer engines are all crap as far as performance. There fishin motas and they will stay that way causew theres no high perf parts for them. And the sst 60 is not just a racing engine, matinace???Theres no more matinace that a 90 yammy, the sst 60 has a fully shiftalble gearcase and isnt a Hardcore race engine, even though it makes alot of horse power for its size. And to answer your question about th weight of the 75 omcs?Well the ones in the mid 80's weight around 190-200 depending if you leave all the stock crap on them.

Well,
I know from experience that the Merc 60 runs well on a voodoo. It also sounds like the SST 60 is a bad ass little engine.
First, I would recommend thinking about the realities of buying an engine - especially for you younger fellas. Reliability is a big issue, motors can be a real money pit - especially if you need a mechanic to work on it. Therefore, getting a really hopped up racing engine is really cool, but when it is in the shop all the time cause they tend to be tempermental, well then you won't be very happy at all.
Secondly, the voodoo is a fast little boat, but I don't think it is the best application to go overboard on the power with. Strapping too much power on that hull could be a death trap - especially with the weight of a 90 on the back - can you say blowover?
So my point is this: a 60 merc or equivalent, modified or stock with excellent setup will put a smile on your face every time you mash the throttle...trust me!
Aiight, nuf of that parental lamenting type dialogue - just sharing my 2 cents - I am now 23 - voodoo was my first ride at 15 and a great boat to learn how to pilot a v-pad.

Well if you were gonna go with a merc 60,you my as well get a omc 50,it will put out way more with little mods you could have a 165lbs machine puttin out 65 HP (with little work)and it would be eaisier to get a 15" mid for 2.You would have to be crazy to get a merc 60 over a OMC 2 clyinder 50.
Merc 60:220 LBS+:60HPno modifications can be done:no 15"mid
OMC 2 cly 50:170lbs max:50-70+HP:and runs great
Merc will definatly be more $$$$$$ to.
Just helping you compare the 2 engines.
All i ever run is the 2 clyinder 50's and they can produce so much HP for there size its unreal.

Carbs, can bore the cylinders, pistons, 15in. mid if you can find one, reeds, lightend fly wheel....
airide18
01-21-2003, 07:58 PM
It would take tons of time to get trough all that electronical crap.Lightened fly, they dont make such a thing,15" mid were????id like to see one.About the only mod you would want to do is possible reed change(boysen).
boataddict26
01-21-2003, 08:06 PM
If someone really wanted to do it they would take the time to get through all the electronics.(Should just get an OMC and not worry about it) You can lighten the flywheel yourself (not sure if they make them, proboly not) and you can find a 15in mid, but it would be hard. And why wouldnt you want to bore? Just as easy as an OMC. But, I still think it would be way easier and could get more power out of a 2cyl. OMC.
YoungStream
01-21-2003, 08:21 PM
Airide18,
You are probably right that you can more easily modify the OMC.
Actually I have never heard any incidents of a VooDoo with the SST 60, could ba a neat combo. I have however seen VooDoos with the 75 Stinger(I think that is the name) I am not sure about the specs on that engine, but it did not perform as well as the merc counterpart.
As far as the Merc, it can be lightened significantly by swapping the engine bracket assembly to that of a 40 Merc. You can mod the engine with reeds, boring, porting, exhaust, etc. I guess it all depends just how fast you want to go!
A short mid would be a good option, then you could slap the motor right onto the transom, I had a manual jackplate on my setup.

Yah a friend of mine into some big power said he had some mods i could do on a merc (hes a merc maniac) but it all depends on your preference ... omc merc ... i dont thin the yamaha will be going on dealing with the price and the insurance ... if the insurance company will sinsure it LoL ... youngstream ... i am 15 first boat that i have had except the tin tippy with 9.8 merc ... what i would really like to try is a sst 6- but when i asked around a bit the only ones i could find were in australia ... and the shipping would kill me ... i have a jack plate as well ... and that was my concern with the race motors is the maintenence with them .. options galore ..

01-21-2003, 08:51 PM
What year merc 60's are you talkin about?I have tunnel vision,i only se pperformance and thats the omc 50 on these small light vee hulls.Lighter is the key and then comes HP.Mercs have never really focused on the High Perf in the smaller engines, they did owever come out with the 44XS in the late 80's and discontinued it in 93'.Wasnt a hit,was 4 cly and was heavy and it was to tall for hydro racers.Merc has always focused on being the top dawg in V-6's and v-4's.Tyler do you work on your engines or do you send them to a shop. The matinace on these is minimal, your thinkin of race engines that are being ran at the peak of there displacment and are being ran at the ragged edge. Not likely what you'll be doing.Just tryin to prove a point.

the maintenece i was talking about was about the race engines ... i dont do my own work on engines ... i have a mechanic that does that ... and tahts one issue i would like to keep in mind ... i know the merc and by the sounds of it the omc's dont need the attention a race engine would need ... and that would be a good thing!!

Used race boat. Probably your most cost effective solution. Sell your rig and buy an already set up boat. Of course if you like to tinker this isn't the best approach.
Merc 60. Your controls and instruments are already Merc. Trade the 40 for a 60. If you can find a used 60 this will be pretty cost effective. You'll get a better trade in at a Merc dealer. Mark Casper's long shaft went 70, so it can be done with a long shaft. I wonder how hard it was to drive.
3 cyl OMC is OK only w/short shaft, which more or less don't exist in Ontario.
2 cyl OMC sounds like fun and you can get advice on how to do it from the guys here.
Its always fun to figure out someone elses rig. It would cost too much money to re-power my Virage so I don't want to think about that:)

airide18
01-21-2003, 10:43 PM
Id like ta se that, must of chine walked like a bat out of hell. Why would some one go to all that trouble and not just run a 15" shaft. The engine must have been jacked sky heigh:)
YoungStream
01-22-2003, 06:52 PM
Actually,
You wouldn't have to jack it all that high, it looks like your boat is pretty low in the water, but the voodoo has a fairly high transom, so the 20" can work with a little height - Also, I am not sure if the setback added by the jackplate is good or not - but one positive aspect that I can think of would be the reduction in trim height which is required to fly the boat while keeping the bullet running through the water at a horizontal angle, which is fast.
ILS - I had a 60 Mariner on my VooDoo. Good combo. If your mechanic is a Merc guy, then there are benefits with going merc. A trusted mechanic can be hard to find...We can all try to do as much work as we are capable of on our engines - but depending on your ability sometimes you need a mechanic to lend some help.

How high is the voo doo transom?Mine is 24".With a step. The voo doo is heavier than my boat so i cant estimate any speeds,if you have a mech to work on your engine than go with watever motor you think is better. It all deppends on what you want to do with your boat wether its (top speed, all around performance,or curisin)

VooDoo has a 22" Transom and is designed for 20" Shaft.
To run a shorty properly, The Transom needs to be cut!!!

airide18
01-23-2003, 06:30 PM
It shouldnt have ta be cut,i run a 15"on my 24" transom.Ive got a small step in the bottom,it changes the engine height a little.
David
01-25-2003, 10:46 AM
My old brochures show a 24" transom height for the Voo Doo. The only one I saw with a short shaft had a cut transom.
I have my long shaft flat on the transom. This is better for getting on a plane and water skiing, but those are hardly priorities for a Voo Doo. Will I learn to drive this thing faster if I raise the motor? Eventually I will raise it for more speed.
Are there any 'whale tails' that don't look dorky? I have a Bob's true tracker on my 150 that looks cool and helps the boat plane. I don't want a big ugly plastic thing on the Voo Doo.

im glad you asked,as i am working on this as we speak.i was in the market for a 150 when i found a 80 merc.this along with me in the boat leaves me with 2 inches of free board.so the answer as of the last run is 43.I fryrd my tach so the last time it worked i was only turning 4100 rpms at 43 mph .I am more disappointed then you guys as I thought we should be up in the 50s
