View Full Version : 12" or 15" mid on my 2002 Allison
Fixing to do away with my 20" bass mid on my Allison with a promax and go with a shorter mid and was wondering how a 12" from mad efi would work on the 2002 or should I just go with a 15"

The shortest mid you can put on it will make it handle better. There are trade offs that you will have to decide what you can live with.

I have run a 12" Merc champ mid on an XR 2002 as well as an XR2001. The champ mid is 5 inches shorter than the 15" making it 10" shorter than the 20". For a recreational boat this puts the bottom of the cowl too near the water when getting off plane. It also makes the tuner submerged almost to the bottom of the powerhead when the boat is sitting still and unless a boatramp is very shallow can actually wet the powerhead on a steeper ramp. You will like the 15" over all better than the 12" unless your priority is as a raceboat. The handling difference between the two is negligible and not worth the hassles for recreational use. The 12" is also harder to adapt a functional shiftable gearcase to although it can be done with enough effort.

But the 12" sure does look and sound cool
On an XB I wouldn't even consider it. On an XR I will agree the 15" would probably be better all around for a lake riding boat but if you're interested in racing at all on the sandbar the 12" is a viable option. The water doesn't submerge the tuner almost up to the powerhead while sitting still
Thank yall, Im new to the performance part of boats but im learning as I go I figured since I was going with a shorter mid I would ask about the 12"
