I have a 150 merc trim pump with two wires coming out of the top of it. No ground I guess. When I try and trim the motor up or down the solinoids just click. Now if I ground one of the two wires coming off the pump, the pump motor works fine only in one direction and if I switch the wires(ground the opposite wire)the pump works fine the opposite direction.
Any ideas on what the problem could be? I tryed grounding the pump itself and nothing,I have to ground one of the two wires. Thanks for any help.

You have a 2 wire system. It uses relays instead of solenoids. I'd use relays instead of solenoids because of less problems if it was me.

sounds like you have a relay and connection problem, the two wires comeing out are giving positive and negative through the relays and polarities reversed for the other direction

What you have to realize is the the relays not only provide the 12 volts to the trim motor, but they also provide the ground circuit when they are at rest.

Both trim wires are grounded through each relay until one of the relays is energized. for example, If a trim motor operates with the UP button, but does not run in the DOWN position, it is probably a bad UP relay. Yep, that's right, the relay that you would think was working OK, the UP relay, is not providing a ground path for the trim motor.!

When the DOWN button is pressed, the DOWN relay sends 12 Volts postitive to the trim motor and the voltage returns through the blue wire to the UP solenoid where one of the terminals is directly to ground. If there is no ground path in the UP relay, then the trim motor will not operate.
