Hi, i have a 1984 laser 380 with a 1985 evinrude 175 on it. Jackplate. 14 1/4 stainless prop. It struggles to get on plane but pulls somewhat ok to about 4900 rpm and 50 mph. I was hoping to use my 25 pitch and run in the 70's with this setup. Compression is 90 on all but one reading 60 +/-. It also has a problem that seems electrical. When running it occasionally feels like it loses a few cyls, if you keep on it it will eventually, like a switch, start pulling. I thought power pack but timing light indicates all cyls are firing when its acting up. I took some advice from the guy i bought the hull from and purposely looked for this engine as he said it was easy to mod and not as expensive as newer engines, which is why i wasnt overly concerned with one cyl lower compression. But now im wondering if this motor is worth rebuilding. It really seems to have no low end power at all, and im not sure a rebuild is going to drastically change that. Any info on this setup is appreciated.
Thanks

I'm not a Rude guy fortunately but 90 is low already not even talking about the 60 cylinder. Get it rebuilt now before you end up spending more money then needed.

The 60 reading is too low. Outside the 10% compression tolerance considered "normal." I'd pull the head on that low side. You may be lucky and just have a bad head gasket-an easy fix.

Normal compression for that motor is 110-120..... Could be carboned up rings, could need a rebuild...... If that motor is all original, your'e probably going to need to rebuild it.
