I think they probably made about 125 or 130 propshaft hp and maybe a little bit more. I'll tell you why I think so. I've had several inline sixes and the 1500s always ran better than the omc V4s, which I also ran, and better than the later merc inline 115 too. The omc looper V4 was a better match for a 1500, and I think a J block engine could probably outrun a 140 looper all other things being equal. There are differences between the old 1500 and the later 115 including the rather important power ports and pistons which the 115 didn't have. I think my points are valid but someone else will likely post and tell you something quite different. It's part of the whole "inline mystique" :D
I wish someone would dyno a few healthy 1500s and see what kind of torque and hp they really make. I'd love to know how a 1500 xs would do. They say some of the Twisters made close to 200 hp. If that's true, they must've had to really wind them little things up high to get those kinda numbers out of them

There is very little change between the 150 and the later 115, they are essentially the same and that should lead to the answer ...
The T-2's made dramatically more torque with their extra carbs and reeds, its not all about rpm.
In the early "Trihull" radar runs the 150xs's easily topped the OMC 100 inchers, but in roundy-round competition, no one uses a Merc anymore ... one motor has more top end, the other has more mid-range punch.

Although there is alot more that can be done to the v4 as the early 140's are similar to the later 110's
