I'm sure this has come up in the past but, 2 motors being equal years, equal horsepower, which would you prefer and why? Which can be modified easier and which is more dependable?
The EFI gets better gas mileage, is quicker out of the whole and starts easier. The carb is more dependable because of its simplicity but Mercury EFI seems to work well and for a long time. Neither setup will make the motor last any longer. The carbs can be modified much easier. The fuel curve adjustment is far more difficult than changing jets.

Carbs are more tuneable, and on top end they will run the same az EFI...(in most cases)...EFI will have beter performance on the bottom and in most cases give better fuel econemy...Now wit the new adjustable ECU'z and tunability of the EFI's, I would have to put the EFI az the prefered for performance, and also ease of starting....BUT, there are cases that contridict everything I've said and this will probablly open a new can ov worms for sum...But all being equal(which it never iz), the EFI will be easier starting, quicker throttle responce...while the carbs give more tunability and no high dollar replacement electrical parts to keep operating...But at WOT they ain't enuff diffrence to worry about!!!...Juss my experences, and opinion...REX:cool:

So, EFI isn't easier to grab more hp from with mods?
I can make as much WOT power with carbs as EFI. But off the line and mid range there is no comparison.

Once you do mods to an EFI, does there need to be ECM adjustments? Do the normal mods work for EFI like heads, exhaust, or what mods seem to have the biggest effect on EFI?

I am under the understanding U are talking Lazer injection, because that is the only injection that offers the same HP rating as the Carb motor...EFI WILL out perform the carbs wit modifications(Both motor and efi unit itself)...The adjustable ECU, such az Brucato's or MAD efi's, will inhance the performance of the efi drastically...Add the SVS to the Laser injection and futher increase performance...Taylor makes a 3 butterfly front that accepts the guts of the laser, and that is also a good performance increase...I tryed the Horn on my 2.0 and the modified Laser Inj., and the laser outperformed the horn hands down for dragracing(wit my application)...I have never, NEVER, had a carb motor leeve az hard az a EFI...and a HORN won't leeve wit a Laser injected motor wit same Mods...I find the wet reed motors leeve harder than case injected motors...and wit sum futher mods to the Laser unit(Box/manifold etc) it does nuthin but git better...Now, bigger CI motors may not yeald the benifits of the increased velosity that livens up the lil motors, but I figger it does to an extent...A carb motor will not run with a EFI motor if both motors are modified....Moveing from carbs to EFI on my 2.0 yealded 900+ rpm and knocked off 2 tenths in 100'...REX:cool:
I am really talking about stock systems not aftermarket race systems.

Till Tmull44 ax'ed about the performance differnce...The performance differnce depends on how much work and time U want to spend make'in it do what U are looking for...John, we are on the same page...I jus wanted to clerify that EFI takes in a larger contex when U start modifing tha motor...and 1 efi don't add up to anuther efi, but both are, called EFI...Laser, Horn, SVS, Taylor, are all EFi...Carbs are carbs...22's, 20's, dual bowl, single bowl, etc...they are all carbs, but all do diffrent things to a motor...I jus wuz trying to pin point what tha man wanted and which motor(S) we were fooling wit...saying U like EFI iz like saying U like women...But, theyz small ones, big ones, skinny ones, fat ones, and fat Ugly ones!!!...They all tha same but differnt!!!...do U git my drift yher???...Now, I do like a good arguement, but we to close ta say'in tha same thang to git one kicked off:D ;) See ya at tha BBS in havasue...REX

Unless your racing modifying a motor is wasting time/money. Unless, you get parts cheap and do the work yourself. By the time you pay someone to modify a stock non Hi Perf motor "which makes it less reliable" and get a extra 30-50 hp out of it, you could been in a stock Hi Perf motor at the same hp. When it comes time to freshen it up you can modify it for longitivity, keeping the same hp. The key to making them last in in the fuel system keep em fed with stock compression and they will last. As long as the piston pins stay in and they are assembled properly. Oyeah, EFI over carbs hands down.Good luck.

T-Rex, where did that triple-butterfly front come from? That is a Laser efi setup, ain't it? It sure would seem to give alot more air flow than the usual two on the backside.

The butterfliez are from a set ov wh-30 merc carbs...I cut off everthang else...I left tha 4 butterflies in the back too, thus tha name 10pack...10 butterflies!!!...Go to the BYUBOYZ site and check out tha projects/10pack teknolegy...It iz disected there...it'z kinna ugly, but workz reel good!!!...REX:cool:
