Its on my brothers Baja and I figured I would help him out. It started doing this 2 years ago. Its like its starving for fuel but the bubble is solid when it happens. I went through the carbs but that didnt help. I ran my timming light on each cylinder when it would cut out. But the spark never skipped a beet, as far as I could tell. Next I was going to install new CDI boxes. Its almost like the rev limiter is comming in at 5500 RPM. But we accually loose power and RPM. Just like its fuel:confused:

...I replaced the powerpacks, (They were limited anyway) and it wound up being the stator that was causing the problem.

Do you think you would just do the stator first? And how much is one for that motor?

my 2 cents isint probally worth 2 cents but anyway sounds like you are on the right track if its not fuel then or compression, then it's electrical my buds 3 cyl was acting up and we thought it was everything but the stator and thats what it was, getting a bad stator the 2nd time didnt help either,.......... comon you electrical guru's

Stator, check peak voltage to the coil before and after the power change.

...always tested good. Finally I took my DVA meter with me on the boat, and tested it after it started acting up, and it was weak. The part, CDI P/N 173-4292, would be $272 + shipping.

It looks likethat will be the first thing to try. Rick,I will be getting hold of you once the ice starts to melt from the lakes.
Thanks everyone for the help. My brother will be able to go over 50 MPH again. Even though he was real happy with just that speed...LOL The thing should run in the 60's

I have a CDI catalouge and the part # for that year and HP is 173-3415. I will sell you one for $200 plus shipping only because I don't agree with people in the marine business using this site for free advertising and profit. I think dealers should be charged a fee. Some local papers allow free advertising for private individuals but not for businesses.

If you're so worried about this site, how about ante up and become a Team Member? Actually, I think I read pretty good. Unless maybe I missed something? Here's Pro Marine.....

I have the RAPAIR,INC./CDI ELECTRONICS catalog. The 173-3415 (35AMP) stator replaces OMC#s 583415, 583710,584287,584292,584634. It fits '89-'90 175s. Their phone # is 1 800 467 3371 or 256 772 3829. You can ask for Shawn, he can verify the # for you. You can also go to www.rapair.com for the information.

The website shows the same thing as the scan from my CDI book shows above. What else can I tell ya? If it does, in fact, need a 173-3415, I will beat your price. I am done with this issue.
P.S. Ya really should consider becoming a Team Member. You'll feel much better.

Mine would not turn over 6K. No matter what I did. Loaded or unloaded, it still would not turn over 6K. Finally it showed up on a spark test as a erratic spark on one cylinder. After checking the coils, I changed the pack, and thought I fixed it......I did not. I changed the other pack just because it was over 20 years old. Still the same thing.
I changed the plugs just for the hell of it. Bingo! I blew past 6K to over 6500! I am not saying this is it, but it is something easy and cheap to try before you chunk up the duckies for a new stator.:) I am glad I changed the plugs instead of buying a stator! I still feel kinda dumb for not finding it before.
As far as the "Team Member", I bought one of those S&F jackets everyone said they wanted until Greg bought them and put them up for sale. Kinda funny, I was never offered "Team Member" status.........
But no hurt feelings here, I'm a team member, in my own mind anyway!;)
Good price on the stator, QUICKSILVER. I'll check today and see what kinda price I can come up with.

I here ya on the plugs, that was one of the first things we tried. infact he asked me if he should change them last year. He said it ran better after that. But when I got in it, I didnt notice a thing. He is real easy to please and was going to leave it like that. He has the same boat I do. I had a 175 2.6L Rude on my boat and it ran 65MPH. His runs 53 and its set up just like mine was.
I really do appreciate the help.
S&F Jacket? COOL!!!!! I want some stickers for my boat. Are they avalable???

Guys , you might bite your tongue 's . bring all the business people in here you want. Everyone wants your money so lowest price is what we boaters want . Look how the price of a $ 291 part fell to $ 200 in a matter of minutes. Quit complaining for gods sake.

No price war, it was a different part. I don't know which part is the correct one and I don't know who has the lowest price on this item a don't particularly care since I'm not in the market.
I think there was a hostile tone that people selling items are taking unfair advantage of this forum. I don't know the answer to that but I do know other forums prohibit it. Frankly I find it useful sometimes to shop the price on here with some of these suppliers. I don't have a Mercury shop close to me so I kind of have to go by what I can glean off the board.
I also bought a jacket and sent $25 in support of Scream and Fly. I haven't gotten the avatar yet but I only sent the money mid December and knowing that Greg has the flu I'm not real concerned. The whole idea is the Team Member wasn't supposed to play into things anyway. If you can afford it and you think the site is worth it donate otherwise don't but your still free to use it. :D
Now does anyone want to buy my old jetovator nozzle from my jet boat? It is a steal and I don't think you could find one if you tried. :D

I totaly understand where you are comming from on the whole team member issue. Money is very tight for me right now. So tight that there will be no dive trip to Cosumel this year. Infact because of the friendly people on this board. One member in particular invited me to fly down to his home in Porta Rico this winter. The people on this sight are so outgoing and so willing to help out. I saved way over $100.00 the very first time I asked for help on here. And I think other people will see where I am comming from the very first time they need help.
Thanks everyone:D :D

If being a team member means letting people run money making businesses on this free site, then I don't want to be on that team. I can order parts wholesale because I have a tax ID#. I don't try and make any money selling parts on here, I do it because I know how high parts are from dealers, and I have had to sit on the dock because I couldn't afford to repair my boat. I wish when I was younger that someone would have given me a break on parts prices. The ones using this site for profit sales have their own web sites. Can we go on there and advertise parts for free? Anyone willing to let me use your web site to sell parts? I don't think so.

Quicksilver, is it so cold in SC that you can't get out and you're a bit frustrated or PO'd???
Cool off a bit. Rick and his very nice wife have been very helpful to a lot of people here. He offers good prices on parts and says that he will beat anybodies price. I don't know. I've never done business with him. Planning to this Spring though.
If I'm not mistaken, we had all these discussions months ago and pretty well resolved the issues to most peoples satisfaction.
If Greg is unhappy about Rick or any of the other members of this family that also have businesses, let him say so and let him make the rules about it. As for me, I'm proud to have the flags on my posts and all the knowledge that people like Rick and so many others freely give.

Hi eveyone and thanks for your help!
My brother (Barefoot Bob) has told me check the S&F site many time but I never did until he e-mailed the link with this discussion earlier today. I was amazed at the fast respone to my problem. Hope this solves my problem... even though I only open my boat up a couple time a year.
The only time I need to go over 53 MPH is when I'm boating with my brother and dad (one week out of year). The speed limit on the lake I spend most of my time at is 35 MPH; the speed limit on any lake in Minnesota is 50 MPH. And, I've come to the conclusion that my boat will never be faster than Bob's... but, 60+ would be nice.
My boat is in winter storage and won't be moving until April (or May). Can't wait to get it in the water again. In the mean time... I'm waiting for a bunch of snow so I can use my cross-county skis.

Hey BB Bro. Welcome to The Forum. Now maybe we'll get the truth from your brother, since he has someone to dispute him.
Kidding Bob.
From your brother's comments, you sound like a fisherman. We need a few more here so from us few fishermen(persons) welcome, and hook that boat up and try some January fishing in Florida. Water's nice and soft and fish are at least a little cooperative.

You miss understood me on the phone. He takes his boat out more than once a year...LOL He just doesnt get a chance to open it up on the lake close to his house. I just want to be able to see him beat my brother in law with the 170 Trophy Alumacraft, with a 120 Rude on it. (That boat does 50) And then there is my other brother in law. He has a Baja184 Sun Sport with a 150 Johnson and a manual Jack(that one runs 58) You see my brother accually has 2 other boats to beat. He doesnt stand a chance against me or my dad.
It really looks sweet when we all go on Vacation together. We have 4 shiny Baja's running in a row. And a lone Alumacraft following us...LOL:rolleyes: :D :D

Yes, I get my boat out several times a year... some fishing, some tubing and skiing with the wife and kids, and some SCUBA diving. The Baja fish and ski makes a great all around boat. Wish they still made them.
Quicksilver... I'll be boosting the economy this year with a new/used car purchase and hopefully a garage addition (a 3rd stall for the boat). A new engine for the boat will have to wait a few years.
Gaines... If you ever want to verify any of Bob's stories just let me know. Has told you about his broken leg story yet? That really slowed him down. I don't think he can do his barefoot trick any more and he can't do his knee board trick. That's why he bought the Air-Chair (I call it his handicap chair).
Bulldogdaddy... Hey, that aluminum boat is no competition! I don't think it does 50.

That thing would sink if he even put my, or should I say your 225 Looper on it.
He just purchased a new 660 Yamaha Grizzly. I was out ridding with him today. He said he found a forum like this one so he can sit and talk quads all day. But he said that most of the people on the site have soup't up quads like mine.
